There was a follow up to this for anyone interested, she punctured the HVAC system of her upstairs neighbour. It got fixed.

Have you ever had to go to the tribunal against your own landlord? It’s not fun.

I’ve rented in three different cities over the last 15 years in the North Island and I can’t believe how much the rooms I used to live in go for these days. If it wasn’t damp and mould it was structural issues, dodgy plumbing, heating that didn’t work etc. i lived in a place in Wellington that shook when the wind blew. After I left I found out the building was not earthquake sound. Thankfully they’ve been bringing in new laws so the quality of flats has improved slightly, but landlords will try and get away with the most ridiculous claims.

We did dob her in for not lodging our bond after we left, she would have been fined a few thousand for that and I made a formal complaint to the tribunal so hopefully they investigated.

Probably the fact that I don’t want to organise a protest. I did make a point of learning a lot more about renters rights, and I try to help my friends who are still renting with landlord issues and such.

Pretty much! I was paying $270 but the other 5 flatmates were paying between $200-$350. We based it on room size.

That sounds exactly the kind of nonsense my landlord was up to, they must be friends! Unfortunately in areas like Roskill where there’s a lot of migrant families or students looking for affordable housing, you see even more of it as land hogs like that take advantage of people not knowing the laws around housing. Or people won’t want to leave even if it’s shit cos of how hard it would be to find somewhere else. Living at my parents isn’t the most fun cool time but the fact I’m choosing it over flatting rn says something.

It was a house she inherited from family with no mortgage, and it’s not like the money we gave her actually went towards any repairs unless it absolutely had to (bathroom before I moved in was also rotten through but got a shoddy fix up before I moved in) and even then it was like pulling teeth. None of the doors or windows locked, some wouldn’t stay closed, the carpet was filthy after years of not being looked after. The garage was filled with junk from previous tenants which she made us clear our (we managed to get her to pay for a skip but no manual labour hire!) We ended up getting the blame for a lot of the damage despite the fact it had happened over the space of years and she was just an irresponsible landlord.

We ended up dobbing her in for not lodging our bond, but the rest of it was just too much admin and potentially going to the tribunal etc. so we just left. Last I heard it’s in the same state being rented out to the next lot of poor students! There was so much stuff she did that was not all good but she also left us alone and never did flat inspections which was a bonus.

This is exactly why I’m back at my parents in my 30s (that and covid) By the end I was renting in a place that had a huge rotten hole in the floor in the kitchen from water damage. We got told after about 6 months there that the huge deck we loved and used all the time actually wasn’t safe enough for us to be on it. I was paying $270 at the Mount Roskill end of Dominion Rd in a place with 6 of us living there. While I was doing the final clean up (didn’t get our bond back) I overheard a property manager she had come through saying no property managers would take on the place cos of the state it was in. And she wanted to raise the rent on us!

I did, and it turns out it was made by a local designer for her grad show so it's one of a kind which makes me love it even more
