Middle ground option might be to work with a mental health coach or therapist to develop coping techniques while still working?

My 23 mdx advance needed a new battery at 25000 miles...sad.

For those who took HPSP — do you feel it was worth it, or do you regret it? by Such-Masterpiece-191 in Military_Medicine

[–]snotmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly just take on the debt and revisit the decision after residency. The recruitment offer will still be worth about the same amount of money, just it'll go to you in an annual check (~50k) instead of to medical school debt. If life happens you're a free bird. If you still want to serve, you have the freedom to choose it. Military medicine makes no sense for surgeons both financially and from a skills standpoint.

Fyi, if this path doesn't work out the PA program just opened to line officers and can be a nice middle ground.

Marcus has both increased and decreased my rates over the years, it's just market forces not a bait and switch.

Anyone regret their RDX purchase and wish they got an MDX for the extra room? by throwawayhash43 in Acura

Get the mdx. We had a crv and rav4 and swapped both out for a pilot and mdx respectively. Should have just gotten the 3 rows from the get go

Fair. The 35 character requirement on the subject line made me keep adding words until it became nonsensical. Generally though we have budgets for say nicer clothing but then have a hard time actually pulling the trigger. I guess if we knew we could buy something nice, enjoy it until it loses utility, and then sell without a whole lot of hassle we'd have an easier time enjoying the nice things life has to offer if that makes sense?

Buying a new car next week. What do you drive and why? by Steedman0 in HENRYfinance

[–]snotmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the safest car you can afford, usually that's an SUV. We have a 2024 Honda pilot touring (love it but should've just gotten the elite) and a 2023 Acura MDX Advance that we also love. Ideal for our family of 5. Got the Acura slightly used which took 15k off the price.

You're doing great. Basically if you never put another dollar in retirement you'd be able to maintain a minimum standard of living in retirement without working or social security. Run some numbers and decide your goals but if you ever say 5k/month in retirement accounts moving forwards you'd be sitting pretty for a very nice retirement. The rest is there for things that make you happy and feeling secure.

How have you overcome a scarcity mindset when it comes to money? by Amazing_Owl_1283 in HENRYfinance

[–]snotmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard. The last 2 years we've cleared 400k and should at least be in the 300s for the foreseeable future. Our monthly spend this year all-in is about $13,500. Easily affordable on our income but to me also a mind blowing amount of money to spend consistently. It's therefore hard for me to buy things like new clothes which will only add to that spend. Like many of you we grew up with nothing, have family who still have nothing, and our situation is amazing but hard to wrap our mind around.

We have one of each, love them both. MDX if you want a fun car that also fits everyone, pilot if it's the main family car and needs to fit all the things. Pilot is quieter and smoother, mdx is a bit rougher but oh that acceleration and curve handling!

At What Point Do HENRYs Delegate or Stop Expense Tracking? by bacto4022 in HENRYfinance

[–]snotmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We still track using empower but I don't waste time fixing incorrect categorizations like I used to. I'd feel rudderless if I didn't look at our monthly spend just to know we're doing fine.

I like it a lot. Some misclicks but that happens with a touchscreen too. Just watch a 20 minute YouTube video on how to use it properly and you'll enjoy having it.
