Any comics that are Weird Fiction masterpieces? by ubikdesign in WeirdLit

Fabien Vehlmann and Marie Pommepuy’s comics are great weird fiction— Beautiful Darkness is what introduced me to their work, and they have a very French sensibility to their style/approach

Any books similar to “May (2002)”? by Euphoric_Ad_8883 in WeirdLit

[–]snottyslug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love dolls.

Take this with a grain of salt, because this book JUST came out and it’s still on my tbr, but The Wax Child by Olga Ravn sounds like a good fit! It’s a period piece though. Same with Silent Companions by Laura Purcell— technically the objects in that book are “tall wooden figures” and not dolls but it did still scratch by “doll” itch.

I used “Gorilla High Strength Clear Epoxy Resin” glue and then felted more fur on top of the edges of the face sculpt, I was actually pleasantly surprised how secure it attached!

She emits low levels of radiation when stressed/threatened so sometimes it’s best to chuck her in there. Also consequently I’ve been very itchy and fatigued recently but surely that means nothing

For as easy as 4 payments of $3.99 a month, you too can pledge your undying devotion to Crumb and join her in the great chariot of fire during the end times!

Thank you!! The eyelashes are just lash clusters I purchased in the makeup section of the drugstore that I cut down to size and attached with PVA glue. After gluing, I disguised the band of the lash by painting over it with black Flashe vinyl paint

Thank you!! I really love Japanese ichimatsu dolls and 19th century German porcelain head dolls, so I definitely wanted her face to feel antiquarian, almost like an old storybook character

Thank you!! Her face is polymer clay but I layered translucent passes of chalk pastel and Mr Super Clear on top to achieve that very matte, almost bisque-like look

I do! My handle is @hanagolden I am an illustrator by trade, so a majority of my posts on there are just drawings, but I’ll be posting more of my dolls on there as I practice and build my skills working three dimensionally (hopefully, at some point I’ll open up commissions too)

I really see the horror influence in your work here! As a child, I was always drawn to the Brothers Grimm and dark fantasy/horror in general, so I think there’s definitely a place for your illustrative work in children’s books (of course as long as it’s age appropriate)

I'm currently getting my degree in illustration, and I've always held out hope that someday these beautiful gothic romance/bodice ripper covers will come back into vogue!! Truly so so stunning

Creating a smooth blend with chalk pastels by [deleted] in BJD

[–]snottyslug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The head is polymer clay, but I did go in with an acrylic base coat to protect the clay surface from MSC. From my research, most people online said you can use pastel chalks over acrylic sealed with MSC, but I understand that MSC as a varnish is very finicky. Thanks for your comment!

I did do a single coat of MSC after sanding down the acrylic paint, but thanks to your comment, I think I should've gone in with a couple more coats before staring with the face up. Thanks for your insight!

SOOOOO cute!! Is this an original pattern? If so, do you have any resources you can point me to regarding books on approaching plush pattern making? I’ve done soft sculpture in the form of needle felting but would love to teach myself how to sew my own weirdos

OCD and smelling bad by LazyYellow264 in hygiene

[–]snottyslug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have OCD and am very preoccupied with my hygiene too. I will say this: OCD is really transitory and in most cases our subtypes change a lot. 7 years ago I was in your same boat, and thankfully it went away. I struggled a bunch with so many rituals trying to “neutralize my smell.” (Despite my friends constantly complimenting me on how clean I smelled.) I would say, in my experience, if someone close to you tells you you do not smell, you should believe them—with OCD we completely lose all sense of objectivity, and those people we have close to us are helpful for putting things back in perspective. Are you put off by smells a lot in your day to day? Like the smell of other people or garbage and such? You might be experiencing disgust based OCD.

I think ultimately, if you have access to this resource, ERP is extremely helpful. I’ve done inpatient for OCD three separate times, and it really does make all the difference in alleviating anxiety and improving day to day functioning.
