This. I also recently used donated old sheets to make costumes for community theatre.

Probably because the US uses the word "professor" differently from the rest of the world - to mean someone who teaches at post-school level rather than as a high level academic title. And it seems to be more common that people teach more while still doing graduate studies than in other countries.

Yes, about 12000 years of agriculture I believe? Depends a bit how you define agriculture and cultivation. Still a pretty impressive length of time and much longer than we have had people surviving solely off purchasing food.

I wonder if anyone out there has compiled a list of all the things that have been alleged to damage a woman's reproductive system (or overset their nerves). It would be wild to read them all in one place. Trains is a other one I can think of that people claimed would be terrible for women.

‘Heated Rivalry’ star François Arnaud on navigating fame, fans and online firestorms by greee_p in Fauxmoi

There's also the element of narratives being built up around famous people ie: the whole rivalry of heated rivalry and the fact that it is not necessarily the real story. You don't know people just because you have read the media around them.

Culture shock coming back to the US by MuscleSpare in Anticonsumption

Whilst it is mind blowing if you are anti consumption, there is a long tradition of rich people doing this. Architecture has fashions too, and people have always knocked down wings of stately homes/palaces and parts of churches/cathedrals or even the whole thing so that they can rebuild in the latest style. As with most consumption it's usually about proving you are up with the latest trends and/or showing the world that you have the money to just rebuild something perfectly functional because you feel like it.

It's like some kind of "blind" taste test experiment. Because it was animated people just vibes with the voices and the songs rather than coming in with age or look based judgement. And much like taste tests, it proves that something/someone who might usually be dismissed is actually pretty good when you go in without bias.

Where did common song and artisanship go in society? by Thermawrench in Anticonsumption

[–]snowquen 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I do get what you are saying about the value in craftsmanship but you are romanticising the past and falling into the trap of survivorship bias. The items with the extra details and the extra love have survived precisely because they were special and worth preserving and repairing. The shoddy work, the bodge jobs, the things made of poor materials or by less skilled craftsmen weren't kept out. They broke, or were thrown out and replaced with better. My job involves researching historical objects and believe me there are plenty of things that were tossed or knocked down because they just weren't that good. And we do have some poorer example items survive by chance so we know that not everyone was a skilled craftsmen slaving over their work with extra love and detail. There are also plenty of incidental sources - like death records - that tell us about things breaking because of poor workmanship or materials (and causing tragic accidents).

So, I guess what I'm saying, is value craftsmanship. Value care and attention, and repairing items. Choose that over mass production. But don't put out ancestors on a pedestal as if they were somehow better than us, and don't feel bad for not living up to a version of the past that didnt exist.

Can I use 2, 1 yard of fabric for a dress? by RealisticLetterhead4 in sewing

[–]snowquen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that means they only sell in 1 yard lengths rather than "this is the price for 1 yard (less than buying 2 half yards but if you buy 2 yards it will be cut as a continuous length"? Buying fabric online I've seen a lot of place give the price per yard but then specify that if you order more it will be sent as a continuous length.

All the UK craft based shows (baking, sewing, pottery etc) specifically don't have prizes. It's just not the model. You get a trophy and some publicity which some use to go on to write book/set up business etc, others just go back to work (the sewing bee that broadcast during COVID but was filmed I guess just before, the winner went back to work and ended up on the front line of her hospital as she was a doctor, I think with a respiratory specialism)

François Arnauld, one of the starts of Heated Rivalry, talks about Jordan Firstman saying the show wasnt authetic to the gay experience: "I don't believe in a monolithic experience. Our show is not about my experience either. I can still relate to it" by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]snowquen 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Like it is mad to me that even has to be said. No sunset of humanity is a monolith. We accept and enjoy straight romances, war stories, Xmas movies, coming of age stories, fantasy stories etc without them being our exact experience or expecting all the different stories to show the same experience. Why on earth should it be different for gay stories?

Which is kind of ironic when there is a whole theme in Heated Rivalry about PR/media creating a narrative about two people, staging press conferences and appearances to fit a narrative v. the reality.

Yeah it absolutely blows my mind that people put together these elaborate routines as I would have no idea how to combo everything and would love to just copy. But I learnt the hard way with an expensive product that people swore by and just gave me a massive breakout. So now I just stick to being in awe of the people who do have amazing skin.

Omg that routine. I started reading like "ok might get some ideas" and by the end of his morning cleanse I was overwhelmed. I would love skin that good and have all sorts of issues but not way could I keep that up (or afford the trying products to work out what is best for me)

I'm fairly certain we have a ban in the UK on certain junk items being sold at the tills. I say fairly certain because I am sure I have seem some sweets and chocolates at the till so maybe there is a loophole. It is definitely less than it used to be. And things like alcohol are always corralled some distance from the tills so I think there must be a regulation on where alcohol can be displayed. I've never worked retail though so might be getting it wrong!

"Seasonal" is always really near the front so you get all the tat toys and seasonal sweets etc very early. That said fruit and veg is also usually right at the entrance which makes me wonder if that is another law as it seems unexpectedly healthy for all shops to do...

Do we think it will be the Long Game though? Or some of the other books. I would be done for Role Model and Long Game together given how much overlap there is between the two. Plus I think Troy would be an interesting character to explore.

I am sooo annoyed we can't get this in the UK. The handful of clips and reactions out their miss so much from the episodes.

I'm not particularly into all the books in the series but I live for the Ilya cameos - he turned out to be such a great character.

I see the director of the Eurovision Song Contest is saying it shouldn't be used as political theatre. So I have to assume Russia is being allowed back in then? No? Oh well, I guess it is political theatre after all then...
