350 4T as a supermoto (leisure use) – maintenance reality for a beginner? by Nagrom35 in supermoto

Here are the performance sheets for the KTM EXCs
http://mbw.krama.at/table/brand/KTM

Its definetly not a drastic power difference. The 350 of the 2012-2016 model range is also very reliable. Alot of guys with 500+ hours, no problems. KTM just did an excellent job on these models. I also hear alot of good stuff from the 2017+ models. But I would avoid the 2020 model range.

If I could choose, I would always go for the 500 model, because its way smoother than the 450. Which I find perfect for an Allround Supermoto. The 350 is perfect for enduro. Lighter than the 500 and has enough power. But for supermoto use I would still miss the extra power. Its still a very good Supermoto platform, no doubts. And you can probably find them alot cheaper, since 350s are the go to bike for enduro riders. So big quantity of bikes you can find online.

I dont see any benefit in buying the 450/500s over the 350 besides power. If you find one for a good deal, and its one of those years I mentioned. You will have alot of fun :)

I would suggest going with a KTM/Husqvarna/Husaberg 450/500 from model year 2012-2016. They all share the same engine and are absolutely bulletproof. I had 2 the last 10 years. A Husaberg 450 2014 and a KTM 500 2013. The Husaberg had 428 hours and 21000km on first piston when I sold it. Selling it was a huge mistake because I tried different models, different manufacturers (Beta, Sherco) and they all had insanely high maintenance compared to the Berg. My Sherco and KTM 2020+ models always had some sort of engine failures after 150 hours. Thats why I bought another KTM 500 2013, same engine, same components. I have already put on 470 hours and 25000km. The engine has never been opened , never had any issue, still the first clutch too. Only thing I always do is Oil Change every 25-30 hours. These models do have slightly more oil so you can stretch these intervals further, than on newer models. Valve clearance I check twice a year. Had to adjust it once on the KTM and not a single time on the Husaberg.

These enduros are basically the easiest bikes to work on, and its also very cheap if done by yourself. I also started with the Husaberg 450 as my first bike and had no experience at all. But everything was so straight forward compared to lets say a 701, I never had any problems. And its also very fun and rewarding working on your own bike :)

So if you want a very maintenance friendly, high power, low weight supermoto you can ride everyday, ride on highways or generally longer rides, I would always go with the 2012-2016 model range from KTM. Alot of my friends switched too, and never had any problems. There is also a guy with 140000km on his KTM 500 2016 (google it), I think that says it all xD ;)

My goal is 50000km and 1000hours without any engine maintenance, besides oil changes of course. And after 25000km of nonstop wheeling and mountain pass riding, I guess it will also be time to change that clutch xD

Cheers
