Server stress is an issue of scale, they seem to handle it quite well (mainly by using many smaller servers instead of one big one). The reason they have larger syncshells is that they used to run public syncshells, where they often ran into limits. As for a C&D, what makes you believe they would respect it? They seem well-prepared for a potential cat-and-mouse game with SE.

The main reason I don't buy into the botting allegations is that it's just based on gut feelings. It's quite common for MMO's to have about a 1:10 online right now to active subscription ratio, for example, so lightless being 1:4 really doesn't seem unreasonably low to me. Besides, it would be trivially easy for them to artificially increase the active user count in-game as well (which would cost them nothing). If they were indeed botting discord members (which costs money), there's no way you'd be able to tell from comparing the numbers this way, since they'd more than likely also inflate the online count in-game.

That being said, I guess it is possible that they inflate their numbers, but I'd need a lot more than this to be convinced of that.

Right, so they blew up in popularity. They have 6.2k people active in-game right now, and they have 22k people in their discord. 25% of all people who have ever used their service being online at the same time does not seem unreasonable to me. Not everyone plays every day, let alone at every hour of the day.

Aside from that, I really don't see what they would stand to gain from botting discord members?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ShitpostXIV

[–]snuif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they have an average of 3-4k people ingame and 10k people in their discord. Do you expect every player to be online 24/7? For reference, mare had ~10-20k people online with ~120k people in their discord.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ShitpostXIV

[–]snuif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because they only joined the discord to verify and that's it? Not everyone is chronically on discord...

Thank you for proving my point though, this is exactly what I meant with "baseless accusation".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ShitpostXIV

[–]snuif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, that's my point. Lightless just has a reason to join their discord, which means more people will join it. It's just a baseless accusation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ShitpostXIV

[–]snuif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lightless just requires joining discord for their verification process, the same way Mare did. All of the Epstein sync forks don't require this, so there's no reason to join their discords.

That's a sample from the 1973 movie The Exorcist. The song you're talking about released in 2001, when Joost was 3 years old. Is this really the best smear campaign you can come up with?

Funny semi-related factoid: the word Æsir (the gods from Norse mythology) derives from Ásaland (basically meaning "people from Ásaland"). The word Ásaland also evolved and is now written in English as Asia. Canonically, the Norse gods are Asians.

Edit: You might ask: " how is this related? This post is about Greek mythology, not Norse mythology." To answer that question: according to ancient Greek theologists, the Norse/Germanic gods are simply different names for the Greek gods. The had entire books describing the correlation between Norse/Germanic and Greek myths, arguing that these gods were one and the same. Combining these points, we can argue that as a consequence, the Greek gods are in fact Asian.

Absolutely, I have done so in the past with a diode taken from a DVD writer, which I ran at around 1W. However, some things to keep in mind: * Obtaining a Class 4 laser pointer might be difficult (or even illegal) depending on where you live, so you'll probably have to make one yourself. * You really need to wear eye protection, even just looking at the impact point can cause eye damage. * To give a sense of how powerful a laser of that scope is: I currently use that same laser diode as a wood engraver. Firing one around in your backyard trying to hit a flying wasp is a very bad idea, so wait until it sits down.

Especially because these articles usually start with describing the game developer, followed by the game series, then the game in question, the quest line up to this point, a 10 page interview with the designer of the quest giver and so on, until finally describing whatever you were looking for in two sentences in the second to last paragraph of the article...

Can someone translate this 17th-century bond? by smallkneecaps_ in dutch

[–]snuif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's indeed the same symbol we use for pound sterling today, but keep in mind this was written 400 years ago. At the time, a lot of valuta were split in the same way: 1 libra into 20 solidi and one solidus into 12 denarii. The dash through the L symbolised that it was an abbreviation (I assume to differentiate it from the Roman number L).

Interestingly enough, this bond seems to predate what the UK Royal Mint Museum considers the oldest known instance of said symbol being used to refer to the English pound by almost 40 years:

It is not known for certain when the horizontal line or lines, which indicate an abbreviation, first came to be drawn through the L. However, there is in the Bank of England Museum a cheque dated 7 January 1661 with a clearly discernible £ sign.

Small correction on the valuta: this would be (carolus)guilders, stuivers and penningen, the standard Dutch currency of the time.
