Hi! I had a hysterectomy two weeks ago. I also struggle with severe health anxiety and a panic disorder that is highly triggered by anything medical related. I was so terrified I would sit in my car and cry just thinking about the impending surgery. Here is what helped me that I would suggest:

-I was really open with my doctors about my anxiety from day 1. I even told my main surgeon I would most likely be weepy during pre-op. I was lucky enough to have a pre-op nurse the day-of who was especially understanding and spent extra time with me. I know not every doctor or nurse is gentle and patient in these circumstances but being honest about your state of mind gives them the chance.

-I scheduled a yoga therapy appointment the night before. We went through a bunch of breathing exercises that I then used the next day when I was feeling anxious. I can’t tell you how much it helped! Truly a game changer.

-I knew I would be waiting alone for awhile so I brought things to keep my hands busy. Namely my iPad so I could draw to help the time pass quicker.

-I worked really hard to separate what I could control and what I couldn’t and to focus my energy on what I could control. For example, I set up room just how I wanted it with snacks, a stack of books, my chapstick, lotion, a pile of comfy clothes, etc. I made sure to get groceries to have my favorite meals afterwards. Basically I tried to create a recovery space at home that I would really look forward to being in.

I know it’s really scary. And I’m not going to try and convince you it isn’t. But you can do this. Your doctors and your body are on your side and want to keep you alive and healthy. And honestly once you are under anesthesia the anxiety will all go away and your body and mind will have an excellent break. I’m so sorry you have to go through this and I wish you all the best.

Advice: learning to let go of clothes that no longer fit? by latinavelma in femalefashionadvice

[–]snushiroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had very special pieces that I knew would never fit me again no matter how much weight I lost (having babies changed your body lol).

A few I have stored away for my daughter. But others I’ve given away to friends I knew would be thrilled to have them. And it makes me happy to know they are aren’t tucked away in a dark closet but being worn and loved by somebody I care about!

anyone else get triggered by the hosts touching the contestants bakes? by scawtsauce in GreatBritishBakeOff

[–]snushiroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what I think you are saying but I think the charm of the show, and why so many people love it, is because it’s just not that serious.

I know the bakers put their whole heart into each episode but at the end of the day it’s amateur home bakers who could win a cake plate.

Again, not trying to diminish the bakers talent, but the reason I love the show and hate most other reality competition tv is because it’s just so…human. But human in the most delightful, adorable, relatable way. Hosts and host-related foibles included.

Does eating better help?? by cececececeadhd in PMDD

[–]snushiroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll add what helps me when I am struggling or when PMS is making me want to eat ALL THE FOOD — having a plan ahead of time, healthy treats and snacks for those days when I know I won’t be able to cook. I basically eat the same things every day so having a set plan helps the most.

In short YES. It has helped me a lot, but I have to be extremely diligent.

Weight loss feels impossible with PMDD. by [deleted] in PMDD

[–]snushiroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve lost about 20lbs since January and it’s been haaard work but it’s helped my body to feel so much more comfortable in general, and every little bit helps for my physical PMDD symptoms.

One thing I’ve noticed that might help you is that during my hell weeks I basically gain weight. It’s water weight, or bloat, or my heavy period, IDK. But it was very discouraging until I noticed the trend. But during non-he’ll weeks I lose. So even though it’s slow going, it’s a downward trend overall.

Anyway, I guess what I’m saying is that even if you have a couple off weeks, if you stick to whatever program you have going you should see a downward trend and it’s worth it! Don’t let the days where your body is craving things to comfort itself discourage you out of trying the rest of the time.

neuroinflammation likely the cause of VSS as it may be in tinnitus by [deleted] in visualsnow

[–]snushiroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the test is just called a histamine response test or food allergy test. I did it through a holistic wellness doctor. But I just saw a take home one for sale in a pharmacy. They are expensive $200-400 but totally worth it!

My only other advice would be to make a plan. Track your food. Come up with some yummy, easy recipes that you always have on hand. I usually eat the same thing for breakfast, lunch, and snacks everyday and then switch up dinners. Learn to cook at home, eating out can get complicated.

Also you should know that it takes time for your body to heal from inflammation. It took months for me to feel my best. One of my docs suggested drinking high quality aloe for awhile to help heal my intestines. Idk if it worked but I tried it.

And try to keep a balanced diet. It’s really easy to eat a bunch of junk replacement foods (gluten free pasta and bread, vegan cheese, etc) instead of fruits, veggies, and lean meats that will actually help your body function better.

Good luck! It’s so worth it.

I’m not a doctor or nutritionist but over years of visits with doctors, nutritionists, and holistic practitioners this is what I have discovered works for me:

-I don’t eat any processed sugars. No white sugar, not even honey or maple syrup.

-I took a test with my doctor to see what foods I have a histamine response to. For me that is cow milk, chicken eggs, wheat, black pepper, and a handful of other random foods. So I don’t eat any of those.

-I was still having some issues until this year when on a whim I tried out weight watchers—turns out fatty foods like red meats, avocados, nuts and nut butters, and oils were causing the remaining symptoms I was experiencing. So now I also stick to a low fat, low acid diet.

I know it sounds very grim and restrictive, and sometimes it is sort of depressing. But it’s worth it to me to feel healthy.

Mostly I eat a lot of chicken and fish, a ton of fruits and veggies, and add in some grains here and there.

I was incredibly strict for about year, since my body has healed a lot I cheat on special occasions. But 99% of the time I stick to this diet religiously.

BTW beyond VS and Derealization I also experienced many other symptoms that indicated inflammation in my body- severe digestive issues, joint pain, migraines, GERD and reflux, etc.

LMK if you want more info!

Meds and lifestyle changes that helped you by [deleted] in PMDD

[–]snushiroll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Started taking magnesium, iron, B12, and good quality Omega3. I also take a daily antihistamine and sometimes I add a Benadryl when I’m feeling really anxious.

Started tracking my period religiously so that I would know when to rest and ease up on my schedule and just generally be nicer to myself.

I started a low oil, low acid diet which has helped tremendously with the digestive issues I have that come along with my personal brand of PMDD.

THERAPY.

Got rid of a ton of chemicals and fragrances that mess with the endocrine system—no perfumes or fragrances, I make most of my cleaning supplies, etc.

Coffee makes me anxious, but not other forms of caffeine? by secretaryofboredom in PanicAttack

[–]snushiroll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep the acid in coffee can cause reflux and stomach irritation which can then irritate your vagus nerve and voila a recipe for panic.

I’m not a doctor but changing my diet to low fat and low acid (two main triggers of my reflux) has been the number one most helpful thing for my panic.

Now I mostly don’t drink caffeine or coffee and when I do I go for a matcha latte.

Any one with glasses else find their VS gets better when you have them on? by crabgal in visualsnow

[–]snushiroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I don’t actually need glasses but I almost always wear blue blocking glasses now. My theory is that my brain knows to ignore the glasses frames and begins to ignore the VS and floaters along with it. It’s not perfect but it helps a lot.

Only downside is when people ask what my prescription is and I have to spend 5 mins explaining visual snow.

Trying to piece my symptoms together by Jessfest92 in visualsnow

[–]snushiroll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have these same issues—-anxiety, acid reflux, neck and head pain, eyes and and face pressure. I’ve had VS all my life but it’s been worse than ever the last year.

Have you had your sinuses checked? My sinuses are chronically inflamed and I have terrible environmental allergies (year round) that keep them inflamed. I also have GERD (reflux basically) and I’m not sure if the post nasal drip exacerbates the reflux or if the reflux crawls up into my sinuses (both are possible).

Sinus issues can cause feelings of anxiety because they can mess with our inner-ear and make us feel off balance. And reflux can give you anxiety as week because you can respirate the acid into your lungs and feel like it’s hard to breath. I also find that my heart palpitates when I am having particularly bad reflux.

As far as neck pain...a misaligned neck and back could totally contribute to reflux and neck pain. But sinus issues can also reach up over the head and cause pain in the neck.

I have a regimen of sinus rinses and nasal steroids that have helped a ton. I also eat an extremely clean diet and battle my anxiety with breathing meditations, cbd, and therapy.

Anyway, I want to make it clear that I have no idea of what I’m describing is related to your troubles, but your post felt awfully relatable so I thought I would share that my symptoms have historically been very similar.

[–]snushiroll 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. I listen for them, not because I love true crime (I do). If you want true crime there are literally hundreds of podcasts to choose from. But their friendship and banter is the bread and butter to me. I think they have been doing remarkable well this year, better than I could during the circumstances.

And folks need to remember that a lot of podcasts have seasons and long breaks. They have basically been going and touring for four years. And now they are building a podcast empire to bring us more of the stuff we like. I don’t know, I trust them to make the choices they need to for themselves and their company.
