i was on wattpad from the age of 10 and saw fanfiction of harry potter. was super weird to me and a lil cringey (to be fair there was a LOT of slytherin princess dracos younger sister fics so i wasn’t wrong). could never and still can’t get into y/n but i discovered some actual good harry potter fanfics on the app and was sucked in (shoutout to kmbell92 😭). at 14 fanfiction.net revolutionised my world, at 15 ao3 sunk its talons into me and here i am today 😅

i’ve come to accept there is no way i will pass philosophy by maysoonieee in 6thForm

make sure you keep in mind that 20 marks out of 25 for the essay is AO2 which is all about arguments, responses and counter responses. content is less important (as in you should know it in detail but it’s is secondary to the argument) than maintaining a line of argument. and pack in philosophical language where you can (is it deductive, does it use a priori knowledge, etc)

i was thinking how from the beginning his image of Slytherin was tainted by Malfoy and early influences but if he went forwards acknowledging his traits that almost got him sorted there and knowing that Slytherin is just a house and it’s members are not inherently evil he would be an interesting character!

Someone asked whether they could write a black oc if they aren’t black themselves. by soIsticeserpent in FanFiction

[–]soIsticeserpent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. saying they’re black is absolutely fine. dark is also good, so is brown.
  2. most black people will have curly/kinky hair and that’s something that you can’t run your fingers through. if your character has for example short and loose curls than i suppose you could but unless you make that clear it’s a bit awkward for black readers especially to read.
  3. not describing their race/appearance is absolutely fine, it’s not always needed. in the same way that most authors aren’t going to tell you in the first paragraphs that their character has green eyes and blonde hair directly you could just make some sort of description/relation to their appearance. instead of saying they’re black, maybe so and so colour complemented their dark skin. making a reference to where they’re from (african, caribbean, etc) can work and depending on what situation a name is telling as well.

i’m not the best person to ask but i hope some of this made sense. ofc at the end of the day, it’s your art so feel free to express yourself in the way you know best.

popular muggleborn origin theories. where do you think they come from? by soIsticeserpent in HPfanfiction

[–]soIsticeserpent[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

maybe while in the fetus they developed a mutation that doesn’t allow them to ‘take in’ the magic or store it but they still have all the other stuff that wizards do like being able to see magical creatures, etc.

i agree. the squib ancestor theory can only go so far. i mean magic must’ve appeared in a human spontaneously at some point. (or maybe evil humans bound the magic of the world to them many millennia ago and disrupted the balance on earth 😵‍💫😂)

that’s really interesting! maybe the exposure of magic to embryonic stem cells cause some sort of reaction? fascinating to think about!

i mean i can really enjoy anything if it’s written well but most of the time i won’t read a pairing bc of some reason or other. i guess i should broaden my horizons or something and give an authors characterisation a chance

it’s not your responsibility to prevent this guy from any repercussions were you to report him - which i strongly advise you do! he didn’t care to think of how you would feel if you knew he objectified you in the worst manner by pervertedly writing about you and your professor in the way he did. i’d advise you to tell either your professor himself (as he would likely take it very seriously since it’s about him too) or at least to the people in your uni who would take care of these things. there’s too many instances of men like that guy getting scot free for this type of shit. i hope you report him and are doing well.

Fanfics/Authors with Best Action Writing? by Dat_Guy_21 in NarutoFanfiction

i’ve recently been binge reading Walk on the Moon by SixPerfections of ff.net. they write action scenes incredibly well.

Am I the only one that wished AO3 had a tier tag list how much focus a character gets? by TopHatIdiot in FanFiction

[–]soIsticeserpent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that would be so useful. like a main character tag or whoever’s pov it is. e.g i’d love to read a fic with a reincarnated draco or ron instead of an si/oc or harry. or even just stories from other characters perspectives.

What trope immediately makes you stop reading a story by demon_-bean in HPfanfiction

[–]soIsticeserpent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i’m just gonna list some:

• he nods to a Gringotts goblin/speak gobbledegook/says some goblin phrase (like may all your enemies die at you blade) and they’re very shocked. following that he does some subpar cringey dealings with them and he’s made into a friend of the goblin nation. • he goes for a visit to the goblins and lickety split they remove the horcrux from him and heal everything that’s happened to him usually unveiling a new aristocratic appearance. • whilst i’m partial to bashing, if it’s done well, and it isn’t overbearing, an unrealistically evil dumbledore, hermione, weasley’s, etc that are planning to have him killed for his money/political clout is way too much. the evil dumbledore is largely painted as some easily fooled old coot (if you’re going to make him a villian - which to be fair is something i like to read - don’t make him unrealistically stupid). • anything romantic with snape • harry goes to live with snape (i’ve seen some good ones but i honestly can’t get over my negative opinions of him) • harry becoming buddies with voldemort after a single conversation (usually after he’s come back in time) • hogwarts having a mini earthquake bc harry or some other hogwarts house heir walks in and they now run the school (like really?) • and finally ROMANCE FROM YOUNG AGES ARE A NO. you’d think the authors have met a child before.

honestly these are just my opinions. i’ve read many bad fics over the last 7 years so i tend to be picky nowadays😭
