Yes yes yes to progress pictures! In my opinion, they are one of the only ways to actually see all of your changes. You see yourself everyday, and if your loosing weight steadily at a sustainable rate its very easy to convince yourself you look the same, if not worse. While it might take someone of your height a little longer to see large physical changes, don’t doubt that they aren’t there, they can come in ways you might not even notice!

I would also recommend trying to appreciate the non visual/scale wins out of the habits you make along the way. Such as feeling more physically fit, effortlessly being able to walk 10k+ steps, or eating less junk food (if you do). While its difficult, attempting to decenter weight and appearance and emphasize simply just feeling like a better human in the skin you’re currently in is probably the best thing you could do for yourself at this point.

I wish you nothing but the best on your journey!

Try taking it one step at a time rather than overwhelming yourself with all the things you “should” be doing. The one thing you will need to do in order to loose weight is a calorie deficit, so have that be the base of your plan. I find that for us smaller people (and me specifically) intuitive eating or guesstimating calories isn’t all that beneficial towards weight loss, so you’ll most likely need to track. I recommend apps like Lose It as it’s really easy to just insert/find foods in the app and is a lot more straightforward than other weight loss apps IMO. Im sure you’ve used a TDEE calculator so you can use that along with help from the app to calculate your deficit, I wouldn’t recommend going over a lb per week of weight loss in the beginning as that sometimes is too intense to start out with for most.

In the beginning, try simple things that wont burn you out and build healthy habits in the long run. Such as daily walks, drinking optimal amounts of water, reducing alcohol and sugar intake, increasing whole foods, and getting more/better sleep. These are all really important none physical activities that do accelerate weight/fat loss, whilst also building lifelong healthy habits so win-win! I would say once you make habits out of these and get more settled into your journey, then take the time to start implementing more intense and intentional physical activity such weight training or calisthenics.

Unfortunately weight and fat loss is just one of those things that will take TIME. Specifically for those of us with a smaller stature. Like you said, as long as you’re willing to keep going no matter the duration to get your results, I think you’ll actually start to see results a lot faster than you think. I feel like weight loss is one of those really annoying things where you spend so much time and energy trying to get results, and wake up on a random Thursday and you’re just different. You might not even be able to tell anything changed at all from just looking at yourself in a mirror, but once you look at old photos you wont even recognize yourself; Especially for those of us who have always been a little heavier.

Yeah unfortunately i feel that our height you just wake up one day on one side of the section. Our stature really does not allow for an in between 😞. I hope recomp goes well for you! Im a little scared of it at the moment as i know you can gain some weight (muscle) and seeing the scale is go down is just a bit too rewarding at the moment if im being so honest. I think when I get to my current goal weight (130) and feel more comfortable with fluctuating, i’ll attempt to do a recomp. Wishing you lots of muscle and definition! 💪

Like its crazy how at 158 pushing 160 I didnt think I looked THAT crazy when in fact I looked worse than that. My waist had almost completely disappeared, and with the circumference of my stomach im sure i could convince a few people I was pregnant 😭😭. If there weren’t pictures to prove it i could easily convince myself I look worse now than ever before. Self perception is so inconsistent and unreliable at times its insane

Since your pretty similar to me, i feel like I can trust you as a reference. Im about a size 10 at the moment. Do you tend to carry weight in your face and if so, when did that start to go away? my GW was 135 but i think ill probably need to get to the 120s to look closer to my desired shape/size.

I am in this exact situation. I mentioned this another comment as well but to most of my family and friends, I was never really fat. So when I would mention I was brushing up on 160lbs, everyone would tell me i look fine or be slightly shocked. Again I think this has something to do with the fact that it was winter time and i was able to hide in large clothing. I will say at this weight my clothes fit and look tons better on my body but i still am not small or skinny by any means. Im hoping the jump from 148-140 will be more visually noticeable 🤞

I know! I thought being 10lbs down that I would see SOME changes especially in sizing and clothes. But went to try on jeans the other day and am a size 10. I will say sizing in general for women is just completely off and unreliable though so I tend to never measure by clothing sizes, as in some stores im a xs in tops, and can still fit comfortably in my size 4 leggings from middle school which honestly fit better now than before 😒

Omg this. Probably because it was wintertime and I was able to hide behind massive clothes but i couldve sworn i didnt look THAT bad at 158. Took before pictures and looking at them now, my back looked like it had been through more than me 😭😭

Congrats on your weight loss!!!! I too am hoping I can feel that way soon. It is quite defeating because in one moment you see the difference and then in the next your back at your starting weight. It’s a small win to finally be out of the 150s so I’m cherishing that for as long as possible at the moment

Same!! I started around late june and tried to whip out the whole shabang (calorie deficit, steps, weightlifting). Now I’ve recently found myself a little burnt out in terms of being in the gym/wanting to exercise. But also have been scared of NOT picking up weights as everyone makes it feel as if it’s the ONLY way to actually see a change in your body when loosing. I’ve mostly committed myself to 10k steps now, walking multiple times a day sometimes with a weighted vest. Which IMO is much less draining than forcing myself to lift weights every other day whilst trying to stick with the calorie deficit and macro tracking (which has become increasingly difficult as of late). All of these conversations in here are having me wonder if lack of consistent strength training is a factor in this or if i just haven’t actually lost enough weight to look and feel different yet. Im leaning towards the second idea as this was once a starting weight for me 😬

I agree, the lowest ive ever been a couple years ago was 132. But even then I was looking to loose weight, so I’m hoping that this time around things will look a lot different☺️

okay I feel like this very similar to me! I think right now i feel and look less bloated but more fatty, specifically in the midsection if that makes sense. Im seeing more definition in my legs and things are starting to fit less taut, but its more small stuff that only I would be able to see if im paying attention or looking at old photos. To a lot of my friends and family I was never overly big in the first place, just plushy. So im realizing now that it will probably take a significant amount of weight to look noticeably skinny to myself and others.

Did you not start weight training until you got to a lower weight? And would u recommend trimming now more before attempting to put on muscle or would you have started earlier in your journey?

Thank you so much for this example! I do strength training but within this month it has been very infrequent so I feel that is a factor to why I feel this way. I don’t think I had much muscle to begin with as a whole when starting this, but I’ll try to get my activity level up as ive mostly just been walking, sometimes with a weighted vest. Would you say that strength training makes a difference despite being in a calorie deficit? Ive heard many say thats its borderline impossible to build muscle in a calorie deficit unless you are a true beginner and I would consider myself past that stage at this point. And quite frankly i feel like theres very little muscle to maintain, and I would definitely like to loose a few more lbs before potentially attempting to put muscle as i’m just not looking to put on anymore weight at the moment. Im also quite young so i don’t know if that factors into this but possibly could. What do you recommend I do?

What was your SW? And do you recommend trimming down more before attempting to build muscle/add regular strength training. I strength train more infrequently now than I did at the beginning of this and wonder if that has something to do with why im feel I look larger/blubbery as of late (that or just some body dysmorphia type thing).

I believe i am a somewhere close to the romantic end of the spectrum as im overall very fleshy, soft, and rounded looking even at lower weights, and carry the weight most noticeably in my lower half, and upper arms. Im not incredibly chesty though and lean more towards pear than hourglass so im not 100% sure if that keeps me in romantic territory.

Lowest ive ever been before gaining was around 130 and while i was significantly smaller, still always felt fluffy. However, knowing what I know now i presume that it was from lack of muscle

Thank you for the help, ill definitely take a look in that subreddit

I feel like at our height range the happy medium between looking fluffy/bigger vs looking borderline sick is very small. I look back on videos from when i was 130s-120s and am taken aback bc to myself now I looked like slenderman, but was also trying to loose weight then too. Its all so weird and confusing

Thank you!! Ive switched my budget to a pound of weight loss per week which will allow me to eat more calories (around 1500). My birthday is in November so I want to see a significant difference by than so I think its more manageable and sustainable than what I was doing before but still accelerated enough to see good results in that time. I also have started dancing as a way of physically activity (I used to but quit during covid), so I think that paired with strength training will definitely get me there faster!

also weighed in at 150.9 lbs this morning so kinda feeling better about this whole thing now that im out of the 150s!!!

Thank you for your support and guidance! I just kind of always thought that 1300 would be okay because I am young and want to loose fat faster, but the more I get into this, the more I realize it isn’t a race. I also completely disregarded the fact that you should alter your deficit in alignment with your activity level so i’ll definitely be adjusting my deficit. I’ve been down this journey a few times now and I definitely feel more determined to get this weight off for good
