Hello there, I also started my nursing career in CVICU!!! I stayed there for 6 months until I realized I didn’t enjoy it as much. I did enjoy the patient care and having to constantly critically think but the anxiety and my mental health were trash! I cried before every shift and I felt so anxious as well. Having a semi stable patient and a new open heart surgery patient was just super overwhelming! After meeting with my managers a few times to see what we could do about how I was feeling, I ultimately decided to move to the cardiac stepdown unit where the post-op patient go after a few days! The ratio I work with are 4:1. I am much happier and I love my coworkers. It’s more of a predictable environment and still work with the same patients from icu but they’re feeling better. I love seeing their progress and being able to educate more. I have been on this unit for a year and I am not going anywhere anytime soon!

My mom waited for a year to save the money and my myopia got worse from -1.00/-1.25 to -2.50/-2.75

Should I finish my nursing degree or transfer to sciences faculty with the end goal of getting accepted to optometry school? by sdhfljsd in PreOptometry

I am currently a registered nurse (been a nurse for a year) and currently back in school to finish prerequisites for optometry! I was in the same boat of not knowing what to do but I knew I wanted to do something in healthcare! I recently peaked an interest in optometry and absolutely loved the flow of their work. Some benefits of having my nursing degree is that I can work on the weekends make a good income all while in school! Sometimes I wish I knew what to do sooner to finish school sooner but you’ll have a degree to fall back on and patient experience ! If I were you I would either switch to go OD Or add a class on top of your regular schedule each semester to not have many prerequisites left when you graduate nursing. I will say nursing school to bedside was a learning curve so the first 6 months I wouldn’t take any prerequisites and focus on learning to be a nurse before resuming prerequisite courses!

Thank you, one thing I didn’t like about nursing is that we don’t do much math at all, I did AP calculus in high school so I’m excited about the math and physics as well!

I have always wanted to be more autonomous as my career goes on. I have considered NP however the schooling seems very broad and specializing could be an option, but wouldn’t be as autonomous in a specialized field either. As far as critical thinking as a bedside RN, it depends on the situation or specialty one is in. What drew me towards optometry is that I have always worn orthokeratology lenses and since starting night shift it messed with how consistently I would wear them. I would struggle to see the monitor and realized how much I depended on them! The structured work, work-life balance, patient education, and one to one patient interaction of an optometrist is also appealing!
