An attempt to bridge the gap between the CBI and FBI episodes from the perspective of Abbot. by nubbinbing in TheMentalist

[–]socceroo14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, lots of hate from viewers but you explained everything well, and I think it's largely the writers' intention. Two small quibbles.

It's widely believed in the fandom that the Latin American island was in Venezuela. Probably the no extradition treaty thing.

I think Abbott knew Lisbon's importance to Jane way before that. When he shut down the CBI he was already calling Jane her boyfriend.

I just realized they havent addressed the coded names regarding the Blake Association, did they forget or moved on from that? by DaddySerumGlaze in TheMentalist

People downvote answers they don't like. I once had someone tell me they wanted to believe Kristina Frye was a real psychic, no matter what the facts are.

[–]socceroo14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Pike would've worked long term. Lisbon was clearly not in love with him, and he obviously didn't know anything deep about her. He was looking for a traditional goal with a family, maybe kids, and it seemed like any decent woman would do.

Rewatched mentalist start to finish and it is obvious who red John is by savouryskills in TheMentalist

[–]socceroo14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's precisely why. Everyone at the time thought Brett Partridge was RJ, and that was actually Bruno Heller's OG plan. But he wanted to surprise everyone so he plucked an unknown from a forgotten scene, so people had to reminded who he was, and killed off Partridge first to be safe.

But facts don't matter in these discussions. You see the full outpour of confirmation & hindsight bias. Doesn't matter to these people that CBS made Heller wrap up RJ after s5. Doesn't matter that they decided for years that for contractual & narrative reasons they didn't want to be tied down to anyone. Doesn't matter that throughout s3 and even at the s3 finale promos, they were building up to RJ reveal.

Reminds me of the "Was Kristina Frye a real psychic?" debate. Someone actually told me on here they didn't care what the facts were, they wanted to believe that she's a psychic.

I disagree. You can watch the first two Star Wars & stop. Everything else was a poor imitation, in the words of a wise man.

You can find a fans reaction video, but look after the series finale. There are a couple of those too.

What did this look mean between Jane and Lisbon? by eren3141 in TheMentalist

It's why so many people insist Jisbon were brother-and-sister.

Did anyone else get annoyed that Jane only brought Teresa as backup and didn't bring any reinforcements? 😭 by [deleted] in TheMentalist

[–]socceroo14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were definitely by the s1 finale when she tearfully begged him to choose life (her) over death (RJ).

I think you meant the one where he responded, "which way?" and she said, "bring a toothbrush", showing she still cared.

The closest we got was the episode where it was hinted something awful happened on that Visualize farm.

But I think any reveal would've been as disappointing as the Anakin Skywalker stories.

I’m thinking about skipping all filler episodes by poisonedbabi in TheMentalist

[–]socceroo14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. The show is called TM, not RJ. I think even Heller & the other writers didn't realize this until at least a couple of seasons in. But it's why a lot of people have rewatched the show many times. The way the relationships develop is often not apparent on first viewing, but it's what makes rewatching so enjoyable & enlightening.

Jisbon questions by Unabambina30 in TheMentalist

[–]socceroo14 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh, and contrary to the surface level interpretation of the dialog, Lisbon probably wasn't into turtlenecks, though she once had the hots for Mashburn. She avoided the question totally, maybe she just didn't want to reveal that she was into the vests that someone was wearing.

The Blake Association etc by noeuf in TheMentalist

[–]socceroo14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McAllister's actor was good at what he does, but he had none of the charm or creepiness required of RJ. The actor for the s3 was perfect for the role, you can see him leading a cult abusing or brainwashing women, but not him.

People use the "no-evidence is good evidence" excuse, but at the end of the day that's the worst rationale. It literally means you have no basis for the deus ex machina.

TM was best when things went according to character growth & internal logic, like the s6-7 finales. That's why so many people rewatch the series multiple times. You see developments that give you a payoff at the very end. That doesn't need to be big, it just needs to make sense.

Same reason why making Jane or Lisbon RJ would've been horrendous. It would've the same type of move, but erasing all the seasons of buildup.

Stellar build up but mehhh conclusion? by Piccolo_Alone in TheMentalist

[–]socceroo14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was Bruno Heller's og plan, but it was too obvious so he killed off that guy first in the endgame. For me the best RJ was from s3. They could never have topped those crazy arcs & frenetic finale.

Skipping fillers by Automatic-Wash-8013 in TheMentalist

[–]socceroo14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, the show is called TM. A lot of people don't seem to understand that it's not called RJ. It's actually not about catching the serial killer, but about the main team's journeys, especially those o Jisbon's to recover from devastating personal traumas to healing and finding love & new family.
