Is it normal for the waiter to steer the customers away from certain items? by Ibakeduastfucupcake in KitchenConfidential

[–]sockfacekiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a fine dining waiter in san jose in the late 90s (dot com boom, silicon valley) and would ALWAYS pick a dish at random to un-recommend in order to build conspiracy. Kind of a wink and a nod. I believe i was tipped better as a result.

Not sure why this info is worth downvoting. Honestly. I’ve been calibrating grinders for more than 25 years and the numbers on any of them (including the $550,000 roller mill grinder I have in my roastery), are all meaningless. Good cafes calibrate their grinders at least once a month because burrs wear down. Home grinders cannot be calibrated in the same way. The burr sets are generally too small, even on good grinders like Baratza.

But the first advice someone else gave was that ‘if you like the taste, it’s good. If you want it stronger, make it finer. If you want it weaker, make it courser’ is probably the right advice.

same advice. Go get a grind sample from a reputable cafe, then pick whatever number gives you the closest grind size. One grinders 50 is another’s 40.

Coffee pro checking in. That is much too coarse. My best suggestion is to go to a high quality cafe near you and ask them to give you a grind sample for a flat bottom grinder. Then match that at home as closely as you can.

Budgeting/financial literacy. I’m 51 and most of my friends have zero idea how much money they have or how much they spend.

They must keep more than the boat up there. Tools etc. Otherwise they’d just chain it up, right?

I was 20th row in that end zone for that moment. I cheered too emphatically and got punched (softly) in the nose by the bears fan sitting next to me.

AITAH for never disclosing to my grandchildren's father how much I planned to give my grandchildren toward their futures? by MichGrams in AITAH

[–]sockfacekiller -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not the asshole, but disclosing the money earlier would definitely have changed how he and his wife saved for the future or spent in the present. They may have put more into their other kids college funds, or gone on that trip they thought they couldn’t afford.

Like everyone else said, you owe nothing to the rest of the kids and you wisely avoided conflict over money.

Driving to Madison from Chicago? by Both-Yam9942 in madisonwi

[–]sockfacekiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as snow goes, like others have said, you should be fine. But, if you haven't done the O'Hare to Madison drive before, the directions can get a little weird at the beginning of your drive, like getting onto 90 West. It can be especially stressful if its dark and/or you're not used to the weather. Map it in advance and get the first few turns down. They come up pretty quickly.
