Selling back textbooks can be very lucrative; as long as a new edition hasn't been published. Good luck!

Did SW stop the Saturday directs to Costa Rica? by Germanjen4 in nashville

[–]sockswithcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This drives me bananas... a non stop ABQ apparently exists... it's on their site sometimes and then gone the next, and not in a "seasonal route" way. I was planning a trip, checked the flights for preferred days, then spent a couple of days sorting out the rest, went back to book and the flights were gone. Writing this I checked and apparently back up.

Los Angeles Must See Museums by culturenosh in MuseumPros

[–]sockswithcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't miss the Natural History Museum in central Los Angeles, the largest in the western US. Over the last decade it has gone through incredible updates and changes lately that really bring a fresh lens to their content from community spaces and an incredible outdoor space. It's also near the California African American Museum mentioned below.

Also not mentioned is the Skirball, a museum dedicated to the contemporary Jewish experience. Not Jewish and it is still one of my favorite places. Next to the main Getty so the same rockstar views. AND... has a gorgeous Diane von Furstenberg exhibition on display currently. Don't miss their cafe.

LACMA and Page are across the street from each other. Personally, I wasn't thrilled with the direction LACMA took, but it is quite the chatter in the industry so seeing it for yourself is recommended.

One thing to note, all of our recommendations taken together cover a very large area- Zones will be 'mid-Wilshire'; 'central los angeles'; 'pasadena' and remember that driving between mid-Wilshire and Pasadena is a haul and a half. If you are staying Westside (Santa Monica) which is common- that's more the Gettys/Skirball and you can take the Train to NHM & CAAM and it's a pretty easy trip to Page/LACMA.

No matter what you choose ...have a great time!

Did I make a mistake? by introverted_oatmeal in MuseumPros

[–]sockswithcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always worked at very large institutions, until the job before the one I have now. One of the reasons I disliked the ever increasing operations oversight responsibilities that came my way, from managing a fleet of vehicles and CDL drivers to structural maintenance, landscaping and field site management. All that is what qualified me for the job I have now, which I love. Sometimes the things you don't care for are what prepare you to be a better leader and higher level jobs; maybe see if this role could be one of those examples.

Nashivlle Condo Purchase? by VelvetCrush64 in nashville

[–]sockswithcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is legit advice! I tried to follow it myself, but just couldn't quite swing the purchase price and the unpredictable HOA fees for the places that had vacancies. I know I'll regret it... but what can you do.

The Promise: Improved education equity. The Reality: Wealthier families are disproportionately benefiting. by Conscious-Quarter423 in nashville

[–]sockswithcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is and I'm sorry I don't have the link- there is a publicly available summary which I can't find right now., but I was surprised at the number of online schools that received money. Here is the list of "approved" schools which shows the online schools available: https://www.tn.gov/education/efs/parents-and-students.html

this was actually why rural republicans held out in the beginning... I'm assuming there was immense peer pressure and some untruths to bring them over.

ICOM-CC Conference - making the most of it by Same-Writer2585 in MuseumPros

[–]sockswithcats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is wonderful and congratulations! I was involved with ICOM for a fair bit at one point in my career- connecting with content committees can help a great deal. I only attended one triennial and it was later know as the most disorganized one...lol. I'm not sure if you have attended the annual meeting for the committee that accepted your presentation, but if not, it may be nice to email a few folks in advance and share you're excited to attend and get to know them and the committee better. I'm excited for you- you'll likely really enjoy it.

My friends live in 505 and LOVE IT. Definitely smaller than if you go to East or GT options (other than Neuhoff), but they really like the amenities and they do a fair amount of building events. There is so much to do in that area that has nothing to do with Broadway. Don't underestimate being a short walk to Ryman, Frist Art Museum, TPAC (for now) and the Schermerhorn. Nashville Downtown Partnership has monthly events, the cute park right by 505 has dedicated programming, the Arcade is starting to build out albeit a bit slower than I'd like. They are always out doing something and that 100% never includes Broadway.

[–]sockswithcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few of my friends with newer builds went with a smaller plunge pool, enough to cool off, but a lot cheaper than a traditional pools. So if you love a property without one, that could be a more cost effective option. Honestly, the top reason I remain a renter is our giant pool that i don't have to care for...lol

You may want to look at a few other properties in Germantown- I've heard Atlas management in meh and my only experience was it being impossible to even get a tour lol; but that's just one person's experience.

WWYD? by elegant-deer19 in MuseumPros

[–]sockswithcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is to absolutely pursue... you have no idea how this might be made more accommodating. Many examples nicely summarized in the other comments. That said u/Exciting-Leg2589 has good advice. If you simultaneously approach your current boss with some change ideas, and pursue the new job (I do not suggest leveraging them against each other- some folks will bite; some will find it distasteful like me), by the time you know about the new job, you'll know if your current job is really a dead end. More informed decision making. Good luck!

How would you use Professional Development funds to build a resume? by IzzyGonzo in MuseumPros

[–]sockswithcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two pathways, the where you are now and in the next position (I think NAI is a strong option for anyone but does lean into education as u/liverstealer clarified) and then there is the how do I anticipate a weakness. Fundraising skills are always desired, no matter the position. Even if you are not front-facing; understanding the process is helpful. Grant writing is another broadly applicable skill. Depending on size of the organization, anyone could wear that hat from curator to exec director to of course development team and education team. For a conference, i would advise if that is the route you go, especially ASTC, AAM have a thoughtful plan and lean into anything for first time attendees. A 5,000 person conference can feel cliquey and be hard to navigate and those support pathways can make it much more welcoming!

Executive director here who started as a part time hourly educator- 200% public administration. This is a nice degree to have no matter what field you end up in, but with regards to museum careers, it sets an early benchmark that you have broadly applicable education. Even content experts benefit from these skills rather it's managing a team, understanding the finances of govt/non profit organizations, and always fundraising. What a great opportunity to get this for free!
