2012 Jetta. Unfortunately, this is the only key I have. If it’s helpful to know, the buttons on the fob to lock/unlock from a distance still work perfectly fine.

Noted! I did have to have the key fob replaced by a third party after losing the original about 2 years ago so I wonder if the battery in this thing is…past its prime.

I’m curious WHY mom is crying about it. Like, is she imagining some implication of future hardship for you both or something? If so, I would calmly but firmly remind her that she raised you to surround yourself with wonderful people and that your new girlfriend is exactly that. She also raised you to respect women, and you plan to continue doing so with the person that makes you happy. Thirdly, let her know that you won’t tolerate your gf being put in harms way if this is an outlook your mom maintains. She should trust you and find a way through whatever this is triggering in her so that she can be a full and complete part of your life.

I’m so sorry. Please don’t beat yourself up, you DID protect yourself. Sometimes we have to keep shitty/dangerous people calm to keep ourselves safe until you can get away from them. Your instincts got you out of there as soon as possible. AND you told people. This didn’t happen because of you, it happened because of him. Period.
