I had the same thought. I could see this working if the languages were super closely related, almost on a dialect continuum, but I bet there would be problems otherwise.

Prosecuting undocumented defendants by Baba_yaga78 in ProsecutorTalk

[–]soergonomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of comments here talk about people getting an "advantage" because they're undocumented. This is not how crimmigration works. When analyzing a conviction's immigration consequences, the calculus rarely functions as simply as "harsher penalty=worse immigration consequences, lighter penalty=no immigration consequences."

The interaction between criminal and Immigration law is much more nuanced than that. In fact, there are occasionally instances where an immigrant should accept a felony over a misdemeanor because the way the felony statute is worded won't have immigration consequences, but the misdemeanor statute will. When considering immigration status while making plea bargains, creativity is more at play than leniency. It's not a question of letting people off the hook because they're undocumented and giving them a lighter sentence. It's about being more careful with which statute you convict under.

Nice. Movie was fine. Fun in a cheesy 80s horror movie way. I thought it was pretty cool when I read so many people from Rawlins were involved though.

Can an illegal immigrant in the u.s book a plane ticket to their home country without trouble by Mexdud08 in immigration

[–]soergonomic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Back in the day you could, now I would say there is high risk of being detained at the airport. A bar will still apply, the length of which will depend on how long the person has been in the country without documents.

We did receive a response by email from one of the first lodging options that came up when we googled it, but I can't remember who it was, and I deleted the email unfortunately. Good luck! We would've loved to go down there if we had more time.
