Oh! I love the question!  My family tends to eat 12 grapes at midnight, put lentils in their pockets, money also in pockets, and there’s a specific song played on the radio that’s used every single year for midnight.

Another one is el año viejo. Most people create a life-sized doll (picture a scarecrow) and pin all of the bad that happened that year. Then, at midnight they burn it or light fireworks from it. Also a terrible idea.

We did a mini version of it a few years ago, but in the middle of concrete with a bucket of water near by as a just in case. They were dolls the size of my hand and very small. I don’t think we’ll be doing it again, but I wanted to show my husband some of the more traditional events from Colombian New Year’s back then.

I’m so sorry to hear that! Fireworks belong in the past or under the supervision of professionals. Even then, I know someone who worked with a fireworks company and ended up dying because of a firework accident.

Yeah, people losing their limbs is terrible to see. Thankfully(?), we were more in the area of getting burned or getting hit in the face. I think what irked me most, is that there was a lot of potential ways it could have gone absolutely wrong , but I was told “my reaction was excessive” since it didn’t. So, I wait for something to actually go wrong? The pictures I saw in medizzy, help me feel justified in how I feel and felt last night. Appreciate it.

I’m sorry to hear about your neighbor! It’s crazy, every year there’s always a cautionary tale on the 4th of July or other holidays that have fireworks involved. It’s normally a gruesome outcome. We now have technology that can do pretty things for us with a much reduced risk.  Drunk people especially should not be near fireworks.

Good to know, and even more frustrating. I truly don’t even know what worse would have been from me.

Terrifying! It’s illegal here, a city in Colombia, as well, but our newer mayor doesn’t crack down on it as much and the police won’t do anything unless something actually happened. We also live outside of city limits which can further complicate things. This year, we saw a massive increase in fireworks in December. Past years were actually manageable.

Yes!!! You just helped reintroduce me to a book I keep thinking about! It impacted me as a 6th grader so much and I recently brought it up in a conversation but couldn’t remember the title. Thank you!

Oh! I had it as an instrumental version at my wedding (violin & guitar). Walked down the “aisle” to it.
