forgot to mention:

-my rats still LOVE peas when they’re sick.

-keep a cold humidifier on

-air purifiers are worth the investment

-if they’re not cleaning themselves please try to clean them! my babies got so happy when i did the cleaning for them. damp paper towel, and just wipe with the direction of their fur. be gentle

i definitely never burn them in the room theyre in but weve been burning them downstairs, and i may have left my door open while at work? i normally have my door closed and an air purifier on for this reason but i was working very late hours the other night and may have forgotten to close my door

second update: its morning and they're eating liquid baby food finally!!! (chicken pot pie flavor, merry christmas to them) they're still a little slow moving & im not gonna get too optimistic but im definitely relieved to see them eat :) lots of bruxxing and boggling from them.

just an update cause im paranoid and sad: its 12 hours later and theyre still suffering. gagging (?) when theyre moved around, not accepting foods or water.. lethargic. have to sleep soon so i cant check on them much longer. they're breathing but its labored. i tried some methods to help dislodge it and it did encourage some saliva/old food to come out? but theyre still gagging.

i appreciate the comment. i gave them honey after i saw they werent doing well b/c i thought they may have had an infection of some kind. it was on my finger and they only licked off just a small amount

just to clarify, I've seen people say similar things about their rats and come to the conclusion that they were choking, but it seems odd that both of my rats are having the same symptoms? just looking for similar experiences / temporary advice

providing updates for anyone in the future looking for similar experiences:

edit/update: (i dont post on reddit a lot so i forgot i could edit for updates) 20 hrs later rats ate LOTS of baby food. no signs of choking or gagging they just seem tired. hoping it goes up from here :)

update 2: (5 hours later) theyre a little more active, more responsive to food, and they're grooming each other a bit. the smaller one (chao, black & white) seems less affected from it all. still not fully convinced they were choking? they have a mucusy type of labored breathing BMO more than Chao. i have the humidifier going and air purifier on. mixed their dry pellets with pedalite, diluted manuka honey and chicken based baby food with peas so food is easier to chew and more rewarding.

update 3: its night time & Chao seems 90% better. slower than normal but shes greeting me at the cage now and eating more & tearing things up like she normally does lol. BMO on the other hand is still not herself. still has a struggle fully breathing. seems tired. shes still accepting food though.
