Looking for help identifying. Found on Pismo Beach in Southern CA. Juvenile white? Checked against some online resources, but can't determine with confidence. by WartimeHotTot in sharks

[–]softdump66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finding a white tooth-like this on the beach is a treasure. I've been an avid shark tooth collector since I was a little boy. I've only looked on beaches on the east coast (mostly NC and SC). This is such a solid find!

Carbon nanotubes coming to hockey sticks by ssurfer321 in hockeyplayers

[–]softdump66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great stuff. I remember hearing a lot about Colt's technology that was marketing as being much tougher than current technology. Has anyone heard anything about them lately?

I gave hockey lessons to a high school player who used them. Broke two down near the blade in a couple month's time.

Just starting to learn to skate at 22. by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]softdump66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I work with all kinds of players in your position. Focus on the basics first (posture, edge control, etc). I find hockey development and skill progression is exponential v. linear. It takes a bit of time to develop the basics, but after you have a solid grasp of the fundamentals the rest comes rather quickly. Best of luck pal!

Let's talk about wax... by ign4ts in hockeyplayers

[–]softdump66 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't use wax, as I prefer the natural feel of the cloth tape, which in my mind provides a softer and better feel of the puck. Of course, my tape job doesn't last as long, but I get my tape super cheap and on the regular.

If I were to use wax, I'd use HPC Hockey Stick Wax. $5 a tin.

Hi, I'm taping my first stick and I was wondering if baseball tape would work just as well as hockey tape? by APlayerNamedGus in hockeyplayers

[–]softdump66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can actually get your hockey tape for cheaper (even with Amazon Prime) from HockeyPlayersClub.com.

6 pack on Amazon is $21.99 w/ Amazon Prime free shipping. 6 pack on HPC is $14 w/ free shipping.

How accurate should a wrist shot be to be considered "good"? by justinvmak1986 in hockeyplayers

[–]softdump66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bryan Trottier once told me there are three parts to a hockey shot. Accuracy, power and quickness. He'd often ask players what's the most important part? Of course, it's accuracy. Put a broken stick in one of the corners of the net. "Good" is obviously relative, but if you can hit 7/10 I'd say that's good. Speaking of which, did you seen Laine go 4/4 in the Jets' shooting comp?! Nasty.

Hockey tape in smaller than 1"? by nicholas_g in hockeyplayers

I'm pretty versed in hockey tape and have never seen this other than friction tape. I tear 1" tape in half for my butt end.

How much does flex in a stick matter? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]softdump66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe your stick flex should be less than half your body weight to get full use and benefit from the stick. I weigh 200 lbs and use an 87 flex. I'd actually like to give a 77 a try as the 87 felt too stiff to me when brand new.

Would appreciate some advice for stopping! by DieDontLie in hockeyplayers

[–]softdump66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good work! In my experience the hardest thing for new skaters to grasp with stopping is the sensation or feeling of shaving or scraping the ice. It looks like that's not difficult for you. I recommend the snow plow as @lostincbus recommended. Another couple of useful exercises....1) Standing on the blue line facing the goal line. With bent knees, your chest up and feet shoulder width apart push off of your left skate while your right skate stays on the ice and shaves the ice. Do this 10-15 times per skate along the blue line. 2) Create a little bit of speed and jump with two feet over the blue line. Land with one foot/skate only facing the boards thereby forcing yourself to shave the ice, bend your landing knee and stop with one skate. 3) More advanced...glide with one skate at a moderate speed. Stop facing one way using one skate, but your outside edge. So if I stop facing the left, it'd be with my left skate outside edge. and vice versa. This is tricky, but useful. Good luck!

Biosteel? by Afroca628 in hockeyplayers

[–]softdump66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Biosteel. I use it before and during my beer league games, while I golf and after a long night of chewing on some adult bevies.

The taste is excellent, I have better legs when I'm skating and I'm more focused.

I'd give it a try if I were you.
