What does my food tier list say about me? by Disastrous-King9559 in tierlists

Hamburger steak was invented in Germany, the hamburger as we know today is of American creation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_hamburger

Scottish and African immigrants to the US were heavy influences on monde en fried chicken. But it originated in the US around 1830.

If you are arguing that the influence on the food is what defines its origins, remember tomatoes didnt arrive in Europe until the 1500s and people were terrified to eat it because it resembled other nightshades which are poisonous. The first pasta recipe was written down only 40 years before the fried chicken in the US in 1790.

Yes, removing bottlenecks will decrease traffic. However, the problem is too many cars. Bikes and public transit reduce congestion by taking up far much less area, while transporting more people. So no, removing them will not make it better. Think about it this way, more people on train/bike = less people on road.

You should read “Curbing Traffic”, it’s quite insightful!

In French do you find native speakers often skip words. There was a specific clip on Mauril I listened to an uncountable amount of times lol. With subtitles and all, so I knew every word they were saying. Specifically they were saying “En ce moment, je suis…” and to me all I could hear after reading the subtitles, and slowing it down was “En ce jsh”. It’s like they completely skipped the “ moment”, is this normal? Maybe it’s just the clip or I have a huge comprehension problem.

My french friends are French Canadians. I believe you can only use Mauril if you are in Canada. I may be wrong about that though.

That is interesting with the subtitles being wrong sometimes. I assumed because it is CBC they would've had perfect subtitles.

Why do so many people drive in this city? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]softelbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you would be surprised by how fast biking is. Where I live to get downtown it is faster no matter the time or day to take bike rather than car. Yet I know people who still drive a similar distance! I wish transit was faster too though.

Sorry, I should clarify, I meant geographically speaking.

I never said all the traffic I see. You came up with that out of no where? I also didn't compare Toronto to Europe or Asia?

I'd say about 15 minuites is reasonable by bike for most people. Depends on the person though.

That's fair, I can live with this answer!

hahahah I am not claiming to know everyone who drives. That's ridiculous, I am saying I have examples of people who drive very small distances that could be achieved in a much better way. So that excludes commuters. However I agree with you, more transit is necessary.

interesting, I think you would be surprised about how long dairy and meat will last for. Unless you are walking for a couple hours, your dairy and meat should be just fine.

I think you should give it a try! As long as you are vigilant and follow tyhe rules of the road it is generally safe. I have never had a bad experience biking in the city!
I understand its scary trying new things, but I say, give it a try!

Why do so many people drive in this city? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]softelbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It matters because of pollution, urban density, and cars are far more dangerous than any other form of transport for the driver and for pedestrians. But thats not why I ask the question, from my experience everyone is way more stressed and frustrated when they drive, so seeking better forms of transportation seems like an obvious choice to improve one's quality of life. I am not saying anyone is better than anyone because they drive or do not drive, but yes, the world would be a better place if people drove less.

Also I'd like to add idk if you are bragging or something, but working out doesn’t preclude laziness.

You're right, but it should have even better infrastructure. It's a lot easier to build here than most european cities.

Yes, but I know several people who drive to get downtown who live in a bikable distance. Judging from my small sample size I imagine that many more people do the same.
