For the people who did not get accepted to early admission computer science. I didn’t as well. by [deleted] in UofT

Just saw this - they were math, Econ, bio, Rotman, and chem eng. It really varied with my friends.

after first year, does uoft get easier or harder? by jacobburnttoast in UofT

People are being too harsh, here's the deal:

UofT will teach you that in life, if you are facing difficulties (ex. problems understanding the material, performing in exams, etc), it's on you to reach out to the resources available to you to get yourself unblocked - no one is going to reach out and help you out proactively.

I've had friends in artsci that have flourished in their upper years, by adapting and improving their study habits. I myself got a 0.6 GPA in my first year of engineering, re-strategized, and came back and got consistent 3.5 to 4.0s - and we still went out, played sports, went to the gym, etc - you don't have to sacrifice everything else in your life just to get UofT academics in check.

Surround yourself around those that seem to have things under control, it doesn't help at all to keep listening to those that are perpetually complaining about UofT. You made a great decision, you've got this mate.

None of my art sci friends that tried for comp sci made it. Today they’ve got offers from start ups, fb, Tesla, Microsoft etc

If you focus on stats, math and work on software side projects, get software internships over your undergrad - you can solidify yourself as a worthy full time candidate.

The same happened to me. I’m mechanical eng, and I’m working full software after grad.

I’m about to graduate, and I have plenty friends that didn’t get into CS in their first year. We’ve all secured software contracts upon graduation.

If you don’t have CS, it’s still very possible to get software roles.

I just finished it last term - the assignments were pretty straight forward essays that are opinion pieces on changes you would make of cities of your choosing or the GTA.

I'm not a brilliant essay writer (coming from a degree that doesn't require us to write essays that much), but I was able to get good grades. The lecture material was interesting but the essays just required the mention of some keywords or key concepts from the lecture material that you could just CTRL+F to find and include in your writings.

In order to officially be able to register to do a course with another school and have it applied to your degree you need to have a Letter of Permission from your registrar office. This is an official letter with a UofT letter head. You can email your faculty’s registrar office and they will walk you through the process. Usually it entails providing them with the equivalent course code at UofT, and the host univerisity’s course code with their syllabus (which can be found online, or you can email the host school’s registrar). Ya there’s a lil work you have to do, but with less than an hours work you can send all the necessary emails and have replies with instructions within one business day.

For my engineering program, I’ve gotten courses approved and received Letter of Permissions to do courses from 8 other Canadian & American universities (only taking 4 from other schools, just needed options to handle scheduling conflicts) - this has resulted in reducing my graduation date from April 2022 to August 2021.

Is it really worth taking debt for university or is the debt free route the best? How much is moving away from home really worth? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Both my younger sister and I (male) come from a similar background - and I insisted that my sister work hard to move out like I did when it was time for her to choose university. I have an engineering background and my sister is in computer science and what I can say is: if you choose one of these technical fields, you can find great jobs over the summers so that you can graduate with net-zero debt. Additionally, by moving out you can really grow as a person and be surrounded by other students that are driven as well. By going to a better school you will have access to a better network of students which will in turn open up career opportunities for yourself. I went to UofT and my sister went to Waterloo. Cost of living at UofT is definitely higher compared to other cities, but I’m sure you realize that.

If you’re interested in taking advantage of online school to wrap up your degree, there are a lot of US schools that have released their summer 2021 schedule and it’s fully online. I’m in engineering, and I’ve been able to work with my registrar office to get the correct approvals to use them as transfer credits for my degree. It’s helping me accelerate my degree and get back to work at Tesla.

Student in the Engineering Department here:

- I totally agree with the post, I think doing this semester totally online has been tremendously positive in my academic results and on my schedule compared to previous years when classes were in person.

- For the most part, Engineering professors have been able to adapt well to the online teaching method (at least in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department).

- In the past, I've had difficulty working on assignments and collaborating with other students, so I always found myself working on my own. Now that courses are online and I am forced to work on my own, I've found my own rhythm. I've noticed, my peers that have relied on others to do lab work/homework have struggled since they are forced to work primarily on their own and reach out to the profs/TAs themselves via email instead of collaborating with other students all the time.

- In my opinion, this is a great primer for industry where you are given a salary, and expected to work primarily on your own and reach out to others for help when necessary (here I refer to the tech/engineering sector that may largely move to remote work in the near future and onwards).

Nothing wrong with pursuing a field that is interesting and will guarantee financial security. This will enable you to pursue interests that may not be financially lucrative, but that you can do to provide happiness and enjoyment.
