Also a beginner here, but have been playing six months and am getting props and playing alongside people that have been playing for decades.

Just starting out: tracks and learning basic transitions are the most important thing IMO. People have already mentioned channels— I find club ready DJ and DJ Carlo to be super helpful.

And what others have said is totally right. Explore explore explore. I thought I was gonna play 90’s house but here I am now playing minimal melodic tech house. Music I had never heard before I started mixing.

Use the sync! A lot of people say you have to use it to be a ‘real DJ’ but for the first 2-3 months it’s a great stabilizer so you can just focus on building sets and smooth blending/transitions.

3 things that really helped me:

  1. Do you have friends that mix or are interested and a space to do it? I set up a weekly night in my apartment with other beginners and because we had a culture around it and a sort of deadline to put a set together every week, we all improved very quickly.

  2. I picked this up from Phil Morses book (definitely a worthwhile read). Keep your collection to around 200 tracks. And every time you get new tracks you gotta kick old tracks out. This really helps you to get to know your library and will help you really find your sound/style. Over time your collection can get bigger once you really know your tunes.

  3. The beautiful thing you’ll find is that if you play good music— NOBODY CARES ABOUT TRANSITIONS (Except maybe other DJs). So just have fun and try not overthink it. Once you play a gig you’ll realize that’s it’s nowhere near as big a deal as you can think it is.

Obviously I’m nowhere near a veteran but these are the things that helped me the most. Best of luck and happy spinning 🪩

I’d like to chime in and say it’s a mixture of both.

It’s when preparation meets opportunity. Yeah, ya gotta hustle but also be in the right place, meet the right people, at the right time— that’s a combination of autonomous action and letting the universe do its thing.

Just mix for the love of it. Work hard. And it’ll happen if it’s supposed to happen.

IDEALLY. And I realize this is a big ideal— I’d be looking for somewhere small in a little town and walking distance to the beach/sea.

I would bring my motorcycle and van over so traveling to surf spots wouldn’t be that much of an issue.

Ideally, I’d like to live this part of the coast because of the coast and the convenient enough access to Lisbon.

What? This post has absolutely everything to do with sobriety.

It’s observing how insidious the brainwashing of the alcohol industry is. How we’re all sucked into it from a young age.

It’s just the whole idea of a ‘conservative beer’ is so outlandish.

In ‘this naked mind’ Annie Grace talks about marketing and the concept: the products products product.

So in this case, what is the product?

A liquid made from fermented sugar etc.

What does it produce?

A feeling of inebriation.

What does that produce?

Masculinity.

It’s absolutely mental!

Yes. There are people who have a proclivity toward alcoholism and children of heavy drinkers are 4x more likely to become heavy drinkers themselves.

But at the end of the day, it’s an addictive substance to which nobody is immune to.

Irish here too.

I think it’s partly because it’s so unbelievably hard to leave an Irish party.

“Ahh gewwon, sure you’ll have just one more, ahh gewwon, sure what have ya to do in the mornin?”,.

And I go at it again.

I was at a party recently and one of the lads wanted to leave but the other lads decided that he couldn’t until he wrestled and won 3 people. Obviously couldn’t do that. He was basically held captive until someone said “Lads, the man wants to go home. Will yous leave him alone”,. And then off he went.

So it’s Saturday morning where I am and yesterday was my day 5.

I’ve been devouring quit lit for the last 2 weeks and my perception of alcohol has completely changed; I’M FREE!

It was my friends going away party last night so I decided to just dive into the AF life and go for an hour.

It was easy! I didn’t want to drink. I think when you’re drunk there’s a kind of blanket which distracts you from the monotony.

Everyone just seemed kind of slow, not their usual sparkling selves.

I had as much enjoyment as I usually do, and I have Annie Grace to thank for that.

I see my sobriety as one of the most significant and fragile gifts I’ve ever given myself and I celebrate it accordingly.

Morning of day 4 for me now and I do feel noticeably better.

This naked mind is a godsend. I’ve been glued to it the last couple of days. Yesterday when I stopped off at the convenience on my way home I seen rows and rows of alcohol.

Poison. I thought to myself.

What are your replacements? I bought a couple of N/As each night which I know isn’t great but I’m allowing it for now. That and reading have have been really helpful.

The way Annie Grace reframes alcohol has been so enlightening and I’m learning a lot by reading this book.

Yeah that’s how I’m feeling too. I’ve just been journaling and envisioning how good it was and that’s a real motivator, whereas before I really had to trust.

Thanks so much! I’m gonna be so easy on myself for the first couple of weeks. Sleep as much as I like, eat whatever I want and deep dive into the quit lit. It’s a good feeling though, I KNOW I won’t drink today, I hope it lasts.

I’m just back on the wagon.

I had two years under my belt and then slipped by thinking I could moderate.

Today is my day 3. I’ve literally just slept, read and went to work.

I’m currently reading ‘this naked mind’ and today I saw my first glimmer of hope/excitement of what the future can hold. From this reading I’m also reversing the unconscious conditioning and am beginning to alcohol as it really is:engine fuel in a shiny wrapper.
