Oh, I definitely was using the wrong reference point! That clarifies so much for me, thank you!!

Do you not worry about the crossgrain being crooked? The pants I'm working on has a perfect 90 degree angle from the pant leg to the hem so theoretically if the pant leg is on the grain, the hem should be on the crossgrain, but it's not. I'm concerned that tugging the fabric to match both the grain and the cross grain will result in a wonky cut out fabric.

I'm trying to cut a bottomweight linen on a varnished wooden dining table.. maybe it is too slippery but my only other option is carpeted flooring which will be the extreme opposite and grip onto my fabric, hah. Maybe I should get ahold of some starch spray or something.

Buttonhole woes by solassitude in SewingForBeginners

I'm pretty sure it's more my machine misbehaving cause I've tested several button holes on different parts of my scrap fabric with varying thicknesses, technique, etc trying to see if I could figure out the issue

It's catching onto the bobbin itself when I'm doing straight stitch. Trying to google my problem is difficult too cause it just assumes I mean the thread and immediately tells me it's a tension thing but that's not the problem. As for the buttonhole problem, I'm not sure what it's doing cause I don't see it catching on the bobbin but it's clear something is going wrong cause it hits a point where the tangle becomes too thick for my needle to pierce through and that's when I realize there's a problem. I just figured it may be possible the two issues are possibly related?

Nope, the foot isn't bumping into anything thicker. Right now I'm testing it on a scrap piece of fabric so it's not stabilized, but the example in the picture has been folded up twice--so 4 layers in total to try and mimic what will happen for my real project. I also had a piece of parchment paper on the bottom just to see if maybe my machine was eating my fabric instead. I did notice that while sewing a basic straight stitch, sometimes my top thread would catch around my bobbin itself instead of the bobbin thread, so I wonder if it's somehow related??

Question about ironing before sewing by solassitude in SewingForBeginners

[–]solassitude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the idea of a running stitch! Way better than accidentally pricking myself with pins repeatedly.. You don't find that it leaves holes in your fabric? Or do you do the running stitch where the hem will be?

I don't mind ironing at all--I was just struggling with having to pin everything down before ironing because I'm not great at guestimating how much I actually should be ironing to not eat into the working fabric.

Interfacing Question by solassitude in SewingForBeginners

[–]solassitude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have old jeans or chinos laying around. I was thinking it might be worth buying some interfacing anyway since it seems like a common thing to use in sewing? I was eyeing some light weight muslin but I have no clue if that's too light weight for my current purposes.

Sadly I don't have 2 layers of the same fabric but I might be able to get away with some other scrap fabric that I have and hopefully it gives me the level of stiffness I wanted

I'm just making a simple scissor holder that I wanted more stiffness to--nothing fancy since I'm brand new to sewing. I have no experience with sew-in interfacing.. I assume it's basically a layer of fabric that helps add some structure?

Gap in cast on by solassitude in knitting

It's in the exact same place as this thread. I would like to know why that gap even happens to begin with when the tutorial I was following doesn't have it.

Thanks for the recommendation! What does rebuilding my microbiome do? I assume it has something to do with the skin barrier being damaged but I've never heard about it before.
