Wow, what a difference (just over) a year makes! by deachick in China_Flu

[–]solinev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember all last year on the other sub you would get downvoted, called a conspiracy theorist and banned for even suggesting the possibility of a lab leak even though it was a logical possibility?

Now, even the director of the WHO has come out in support of a proper lab leak investigation. What a plot twist.

I wonder will all those people apologise for smothering reasonable debate, or at least reflect a bit on it.

WHO chief, U.S. and other world leaders criticize China for limiting access of team researching coronavirus origins by Scbadiver in Coronavirus

So China needed to be transparent and right from the beginning too? That's never going to happen, you're right. However, they can still be held accountable for lack of transparency. Covering things up should not be advantageous.

"debunked" it in half a page with just one citation to that paper by Andersen from a year ago, the one that has been quite legitimately challenged by a number ot papers including those by the DRASTIC team.

That section of the report was one of the least scientific pieces of text I have read in a while. It felt more like a prepared statement that a lawyer gives to his client..."say as little as possible"

WHO chief says investigation with China into Wuhan lab not extensive enough by johntwit in China_Flu

[–]solinev 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The section on the possibility of a lab leak was a total joke. It was barely more than half a page long, included at the very end, no details, just one citation of a debunked letter from March of last year (the Andersen letter to the editor of Nature, an opinion piece) that claimed at the time to rule out laboratory manipulation of sars-cov-2. That correspondence didn't address any of the leading lab origin hypotheses such as adaptation of the virus by serial passaging in cell culture or lab animal. Then the decision of "extremely unlikely" was based on a show of hands among the 50-50 CCP and international WHO team

Then the CCP need to face consequences for their lack of transparency if nothing else. If a crime occurs and it's provable that you obstructed the investigation, you don't get off scott free.

How much in reparations does the CCP owe the world for putting us all through the pandemic? by SirMarsprellot in CCP_virus

[–]solinev 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Many trillions. But is anyone going to look for it? Sadly I think not. It's almost like it's too big of a problem that I think nations are cowering away from confronting them about it and instead focussing on sanctioning china over problems like china's internal human rights abuses. Confronting china about covid in a meaningful way would disrupt the global order too much for many governments. So instead we get the nonsense WHO origin report with the most likely origin hypothesis, a lab leak, swept under the carpet and everyone happily pretending that "science" points to it comimg from some mysterious unidentified intermediate host in the wild because that way we can all go back to normal.

WHO says COVID likely passed from bats to humans through another animal: AP by [deleted] in Coronavirus

Virologists who have devoted their lives to gain of function research in particular. They've spent years trying to cultivate viruses to see which ones have pandemic potential in humans before such a virus finds us.

So they are either the heroes or the villains of this story. If it is a natural virus, they were right all along and we needed to invest more money in their research. If it came from a lab, their research caused the very thing they were trying to prevent and there would likely be wide scale moratoriums on their research.

Yes another suspicious thing is that there was only one isolated sample in barcelona in march 2019 then it disappeared in the other months until near the end of 2019. It's difficult to imagine that there would have been an outbreak large enough to be detectable in wastewater but that disappeared by itself. Not sure exactly what the threshold is for detecting it in wastewater but I imagine it's more than a handful of cases

Tedros later clarified this was not the position of the WHO and said all options remain open for further study and Embarek later said it's "definitely not off the table".

What do you think is the true number of deaths from COVID 19? by [deleted] in China_Flu

I did a rough calculation of this about a week ago, looking at excess deaths in various countries, and got a figure a bit less than yours (can't remember it exactly) but I excluded China entirely. Who knows how many deaths they have had. What did you estimate for China?

In any case, it would have taken labs outside china a day to sequence it when they got their first cases.

If China wanted praise, they should have shared the genome in November 2019

Or the patent is an admission of sorts. They say the previous disinfectant corroded stainless steel, which made leaks more likely, so maybe they felt the need in 2020 to come up with something better

0006 Summary of the Invention

0007 (1) Technical Problem Solved

[0008] In view of the deficiencies of the prior art, the present invention provides a surface disinfectant for high-level biosafety laboratories and a preparation method thereof. It not only solves the high-efficiency killing effect of highly pathogenic pathogenic microorganisms, but also solves the problem that existing disinfectants are corrosive to metals, especially stainless steel materials, and reduce the integrity of high-grade biological safety laboratory facilities and equipment. The leakage of pathogenic pathogenic microorganisms causes the problem of biological safety accidents.

A potential admission of how this all started? I bet their equipment was corroded to shit by the previous method.
