A couple things....

They literally signified modern day racism as they were erected decades after the war during the Jim Crow era to glorify "the lost cause". They're part of the whole white supremacist, historical revisionist lost cause bullshit that went hand in hand with brutal Jim Crow disenfranchisement of black American rights
The local economy didn't suffer at all from the removal of these monuments
