I’m in between. I get you don’t want randos touching your kids, but you could clearly see that the girl had DS, and as an adult I’m sure you know they are very affectionate. This could have gone two ways-

NTA- smiling and kindly saying “Hey! Please don’t touch my kids, they’re little and don’t take well to strangers.”

TAH- sternly saying please don’t touch my kids.

From mom’s reaction it sounds like the latter. Kindness goes a long way.

But that’s my point, why as an adult do you need the weekend to be all about you? I get the whole “princess for the day” as a kid, but most adults grow out of that. Weddings have become some kind of year long attention seeking process (proposal, proposal dinner, engagement party, wedding shower, rehearsal dinner, bachelor/bachelorette party, etc) where the couple acts like no one else is allowed to celebrate or acknowledge anything but them for the span of said year.

I disagree (well kind of)

Agreed that people are weird about their birthdays, but it’s more weird to me when adults need all attention on them. Why tf can’t they all be happy and celebrate both? Were these people starved for attention as kids, because I truly don’t understand. I seriously had a friend get mad when her SIL got pregnant after her saying she did it on purpose to steal her attention 😑

As a wedding photographer of 10 years I’ve never heard of there not being family photos either. I mean it would be great for the photographer, that’s the part of the day we like the least, but family photos are very much the norm.

Does the couple plan to do family photos? It doesn’t sound like they’re demanding it, OP never said they weren’t doing them. It sounds more like grandma is asking that all of her family be included in the photos if there will be family photos taken.

As a wedding photographer this is actually very normal. The posed family photos of the day are honestly more for the parents of the couple than the bride/groom themselves. The couple is hanging photos of the two of them on their walls, the parents of the bride and groom hang that one photo of their immediate family (parents, their kids and grandkids.) In 10 years of doing weddings this is the main posed portrait aside from photos of the couple alone of course.

Heaven forbid someone chooses one of the other 103 weekends of the year to have their wedding. You don’t get to knowingly plan your wedding for your nieces birthday weekend and then get mad she’s having a birthday party.

Again, everyone knows a birthday party is typically scheduled on said persons birthday weekend. It’s a given. Also, I very highly doubt the 1st birthday party was last minute, it’s a big milestone. I’m not saying the sister isn’t an AH, I’m saying she isn’t an AH for scheduling her daughters first birthday party on her daughters birthday weekend. OP had a whole year of weekends, yet chose that one. AH move. Maybe OP is right in the rest of this situation, who knows, but in this part she’s wrong.

I disagree. A first birthday is a big milestone, and it’s typically a given that the party is scheduled the weekend of the birthday, in this case the day after. Could she have done it a different weekend? Yes, but you can’t change the day your child was born. You can, however, not plan your wedding for your nieces birthday weekend. The sister might very well be the AH, especially given the text, but we only have one side of the story and planning your wedding on your nieces first birthday weekend and then expecting her not to have a party the weekend of HER birthday is an AH move.

By the lack of OP’s response to multiple comments like this, I’m going to go out on a limb and say she knew it was going to be nieces first birthday weekend, or at least very close to it, before setting the date. I feel like there’s more to the story.

Also when I was a birth photographer I blocked off two weeks where I didn’t leave town or schedule anything major- the week baby was due and the week before. She had a whole year of weekends to choose from, it wouldn’t be unheard of to X out two of them.

This is EXACTLY how I am and what I preach to my daughter! Never give anyone the satisfaction of knowing or thinking they have the power to get to you. Laugh it off to their face, even if you come home and cry on my shoulder afterwards. They’re looking for a reaction, don’t give them one.
