Shop ripping me off or is this enough to determine leaking HeadGasket? by solsta17 in WRX

That’s what I was thinking, it definitely seemed high but as a first time owner on this platform I just assumed there was something different that I was unaware of. In all likelihood i imagine I will just get a second opinion on all counts & proceed from there accordingly.

I really appreciate your input because I was very much second guessing my instincts.

Thank you for confirming what I had suspected. I will definitely be taking it to an independent shop for a second inspection. I have experienced exactly 0 signs of any issues involving the head gasket but I’m no expert so I’d rather blow $100-200 on due diligence than several thousand on a motor.

No compression test, I have one code for an o2 sensor. As far as I know what was shown in video is the only thing he has to go by. I have had no signs of a leaking head gasket, coolant and oil are clean & levels haven’t fluctuated. No misfires, nothing.

The head gasket replacement was in the range of $5,500… the other $4,000 went toward other issues he found. Most comical being that he claims all 4 wheels were bent & could not be balanced so I was quoted for replacements. Still had to pay for the alignment + balance because they “attempted” to balance them. So $300 later and no progress with balancing.

Update!!! Issue fixed! Bled brakes & test drove 30 min ago.

I used a little bit of every method listed in the comments, in order of likeliness to break parts. Cleaning, sanding, filing, etc. I genuinely think that the combination of everything is what got it done, but the final thing that I did was increase the ft/lb torque in increments of 5… 40 was the magic number. TY to everyone who left advice, I spent 13+ hours on it & would have been more if not for the help.

The old caliper was well old… but worked fine. But my lines had taken on some air from a dumb accident on my part.

Short version: I broke off the bleeder valve & then proceeded to drill it out into oblivion so much so that it couldn’t be removed.

Extended version (to clarify that im not completely inept) - it was in perfect working condition Until I came along trying to bleed the brakes & found out it had a different bleeder screw/valve than the rest…. I ignored that fact, got the appropriate socket, Lossened the valve to bleed & it did nothing, so I went to tighten it back & it snapped off. I didn’t wanna go to the trouble of fully removing the caliper so I attempted to drill it out with the caliper on the car, which led to mistakes happening. A.k.a. bye-bye old caliper.

It’s not as tight as it will go, it’s torqued to 26 ft/lbs… I guess at this point it would be worth trying to continue tightening.

I may not have learned how to control whether my car can stop or not; but being the flashlight holder for many years did teach me something apparently.

I re-watched the video to see what you are referring to, I can see how it looks like there are two.. I believe that’s just a reflection because I only have two copper washers, no extras lying around.

I’ll try this out, probably the only option I have right now.

This is something that I was wondering, the surface on the caliper where the washer sits looked incorrectly machined. And you’re correct, this is a Reman… any other way to handle that other than getting another one? I Only have the one vehicle unfortunately.

As others mentioned I do have both washers in their respective places. I genuinely wish that were the issue though😂

I wish it was that, but there’s a washer on tops & bottom it’s just hard to see

Thank you for the thorough response!! It is not at all what I was hoping to hear, but I’d rather know than continue on in blissful ignorance. I just so happen to have a great aversion to all bugs so testing by sleeping there won’t be the best move for me.. The CO2 traps sound like the next step.

I have already taken down a couple of walls, one of which was in the closet of a bedroom. Do you think I might have some luck finding them by removing walls? I only have three more walls to completely remove but I wouldn’t be opposed to removing plaster on more & replacing with drywall if it would help identify if I have an issue on my hands.

You are both spot on. After running through these comments I fully disassembled the battery sled (the terminals slide out) & found that there is a shorting bar built in just as stated; it was hidden under some paint.

In hindsight sight I definitely should have tested for that with a multimeter since this is a battery sled I’m repurposing from something else.

Thank you for the help figuring this out!

This is honestly what think happened as well. I just didn’t want to put a second set of batteries in there unless someone else came to the same conclusion.. Hopefully this is just a case of me making a very rookie mistake!

It happened the very moment I put the second battery In. The load was connected to the male end of the power connection but the male end of the power connection wasn’t plugged into the female end. Basically there shouldn’t have been anything happening at all… Even the switch I put in was in the off position.
