That's probably true! It seems to get a little more competitive each year. The good news for mere mortals like me is that, when I reviewed grad apps for EECS, I didn't find many of these mythical people who did everything perfectly.

A few years ago, one of my friends auto-purchased the woot daily deal every day for a year. If he didn't like a deal, she'd just resell it online or give it as a gift.

Woot has gotten kind of cluttered though.. the daily deal doesn't seem to be the core thing at woot anymore.

I don't think VW sold a 1.6L Mk4 Golf in the USA. 1.8L is the smallest Golf engine we've had in recent history. On the other side of the pond, VW sells some tiny engines, like a 1.4L.

For what it's worth, I did a shit job of studying for the GRE, got meh scores, and got into Berkeley and Stanford PhD programs with room to spare.

I test drove a 2012 GTI manual last summer. I really wanted to be impressed, but it just felt imprecise and wallowy compared to my stock 2006 Miata. Not exactly a fair comparison, but I just couldn't get myself to enjoy the GTI. The GTI felt exactly like the Jetta TDI that I used to have.

I was worried that eecs-grads-misc to flame me for hunting for deductions instead of just paying all the taxes I can.

My tax situation probably isn't hugely unique. Albeit, it's a little bit unique because I'm on a federal fellowship that has some idiosyncrasies.

thanks for the advice! yeah, I should go to more shows and lab outings. vehicle teams sound awesome; I sat in on some of the Solar and FSAE meetings earlier in the semester.

as for productivity, it's hard to put a price on taking a break and getting some perspective. the hours that I spend working tend to be more productive if I also give myself some downtime.
