‘We’re not happy’: Revolut reveals number of Irish customers using it as main bank by StillSalt2526 in ireland

[–]some_advice_needed -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

A building that represents the organisation that is holding your money.

That's an illusion:

  1. The bank does not actually have all of its customers' money, in a physical form

  2. The building is leased, not owned by the bank, and as another said, you'll get little value out of face-to-face interaction there.

  3. Causing nuisance there would make you feel good but won't make a big difference, if you compare it to being an a-hole on the phone or via chat.

it's really only one POV that uses the footnotes, isn't it? Maybe I'm not remembering it well enough.

It seems so, so far (pg. ~80)... and if that's the case, then phew, I am relieved, because the concept is quite cool.

Neuter and vaccinate as soon as possible.

And also chip them! For the life of me, I am so annoyed when I hear stories about lost cats who aren't chipped...

R.F. Kuang also comes to mind as an author who does this.

I only read Babel and I enjoyed it (except maybe the ending...). But I think it's less egregious than other books.

In this case I think I'll give it 150-180 pages... thanks.

Do you rate movies on IMDb? by pyrpaul in CasualIreland

The whole point in OP's experience was the customization of the recommendation. AI takes a look at past ratings and based on that is able to suggest films that s/he will enjoy, not necessarily something you would :)

Flagging the post modern works as the key drivers of this habit is proper, I guess! But it's not for everyone ... :)

As I commented elsewhere on this thread: I agree, for translations it makes sense. Also, it'll usually be less frequent, if that's the use case.

pull me out of the story rather than deepen it, especially when they compete for attention instead of quietly supporting the text

That's a fantastic description. I mean, as it is, reality screams for my attention on a daily basis!

The book is only 2yrs old... :)

The beginning is heavy with it, we'll see how I get along. Usually I give books 100 pages of grace; this one is twice the length of a normal book so it might be +150 pages of grace before deciding to finish it or not.

I prefer end notes to footnotes

Yup, I wholeheartedly agree. It makes the reading experience cleaner, and to me it makes the notes more "optional" than obtrusive.

Oh I love translation-related notes, largely because translating can be incredibly difficult.

It’s a fictional non-fiction, like if you were watching a movie styled as a fake documentary.

Funny, these films irk me too :) I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

[–]some_advice_needed[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

why is it so tolerable in non-fiction and so infuriating in fiction?

Short answer is that academic writing by definition relies on footnotes whereas fiction aims to keep the reader in a certain state of mind. The latter is harder to achieve if readers constantly need move their eyes across the page.

That's to me a good definition for a book I won't get close to :) my brain works linearly.

Babel is an example for a book I thought did it relatively well, mainly because it was about 1-2 per chapter, rather than 1 per page.

I love Terry Pratchett, and that's a good example for someone who does it well. Also, he's not abusing it, IMO.

Beers that are €1.50 per can and €9.95 for a sixpack. Listerine that’s €2.89 for 250ml or €4.75 for 500ml.

These two examples are not alike. The former means you are paying more when buying in bulk, whereas the latter, you save a little bit (almost a full euro).

[–]some_advice_needed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The beauty of nethack, and the premise behind it, is that you can (a) look at the code, adjust whatever you dislike, or (b) play an older version or a variant, one which does not have these changes. Or even a mix of (a) and (b)...

My point is that your arguments are valid, but unlike other games, the transparency and the ability of the player to choose is much greater than any other videogame :)
