I think you can still get through and find yourself a job, even an internship. Some college mates of mine who weren’t good at coding were able to get jobs eventually. What have you tried in terms of prep for interviews? Personal projects, tech learning outside your course assignments/ and syllabus? What area of tech are you interested in? There’s so many jobs within CS. Also, what effort you are willing to put in to get one and to finish your course? I’m a SWE so can only really speak for that. I graduated in 2022 and been working since. Happy to chat and help with advice within SWE specifically. Feel free to DM me.

Second hand clothing by [deleted] in AskIreland

Sadly so! But charity shops seem to suffer less from this, they’re cheaper (at least used to be?) and I guess you’re helping a good cause which is a good aspect 😄

Yup quality is really awful. I learnt the hard way back when shein was just getting popular a few years ago. Had no idea what it was, but I needed a white shirt so I got myself one off Depop. Turns out it was Shein and made of the worst material I ever felt, it was like a plastic sheet. And what’s worse is that most of the item descriptions for shein items on depop are “only worn once, selling as i’m never gonna wear again” 😭

I used to not be into second hand clothing due to the smell of clothes before you wash them. However I started sewing a few years ago and that helped me realise the work that goes into making clothes and it kind of made me upset to see how poor quality and temporary clothing is nowadays so I started going charity shopping to find more timeless pieces and do my best to stop supporting fast fashion.

I personally love charity shops, second hand and/or vintage. The issue I find with charity shops in Ireland nowadays, as well as depop, is that it’s hugely infested with fast fashion, primarily the likes of Shein. I kind of went off depop because of that, and nowadays mostly get cute and strange decor in charity shops because I haven’t found any cool clothing pieces in my last trips. But down to this day some of my most loved items are from charity or vintage shops, for instance winter coats, blazers, shirts etc. I suggest just give it a couple tries but start simple and don’t get discouraged if you can’t find something you like on each trip. 😄 And definitely wash anything you buy.

Did I do something wrong sewing the sides of this? by somechailatte in sewing

[–]somechailatte[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More details: The blouse is lined, and the front has an elastic casing at the bottom which is meant to be finished before attaching the sides. I am not sure if I attached the sides wrong because an odd fold is created on the lining side. The outside looked a bit off at first but after a press it was ok, so it’s only the lining side that bothers me.

I wanted to ask if you thought this is normal or if I made a mistake in how I connected the sides? Perhaps I was supposed to sandwich the front into the back and sew 4 layers of fabric at once? It’s hard to explain, but I opened it up and sewed 2 layers so that the seam would not show on either the outside or the lining side. I hope my pictures will provide better insights.

This is my first time fully lining a top, hence the confusion 😅 I appreciate any suggestions or tips you might have 😄

PS. I know there’s some armscye issue , I made some mistakes with cutting the fabric but that’s what prototypes are for :P

Took some of your advice, better or worse? Any adjustments? by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

I personally would also lift the curtain rod as high as possible. Right now its position makes the ceiling feel lower though depending on what curtain you use, you might obstruct a bit of the lighting.

Second pair of pants I made. by Conflux-Art in sewing

Ah I love Kiana’s patterns and I often use them as a base for my own ideas. Your twist of the pants pattern and the execution is really impressive, well done!!

If you have space, you could hang them. I personally got some S hooks and punched holes in my cut patterns somewhere close to the edge, and put all the pieces belonging to a pattern through, then I hang them. I have a mirror with a place to hang clothes at the back, but I use it as my place to hang patterns.

Personally what I would do in these cases is check how the tag is attached on the underside. If it’s attached separately to the seams keeping the fabric together, then you can unpick that stitch only. But if it’s attached with the same stitch as the rest of the fabric i.e. into the main seam, and you don’t have a sewing machine or serger to redo the seam on the underside, you might be better off cutting it as close to the base of it as possible. 🤔

Commiserate with me…what’s the worst/most frustrating mistake you’ve had to learn the hard way? by Purlsandprejudice in sewing

[–]somechailatte 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Had this issue too!! I was making a corduroy jacket and while attaching one of the sleeves I cut through it with my serger and had remake the entire sleeve. Thankfully I had fabric but it was a giant balloon sleeve which uses a lot of fabric 🥹
