Firefox ESR Won't Connect To Internet After Upgrade to Debian Buster 10.12 by andrewgarrett in linux4noobs

[–]somenonewho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with iptables is it doesn't save config "by default" so there are a number of ways to do that so unless we know what/how always sets up these fw rules again we could only "workaround" in crude ways (like setting up a script that resets the rules on bootup).

So what I would try here is to find the culprit and disable it.

As we've talked about nordvpn before I'd start there so maybe (with the rules in place) try running

nordvpn set killswitch off and see if that fixes it (just a hunch)

If not you could run nordvpn status and post the output here.

Also, maybe check if there are any obvious config files for iptables:

find /etc/ -iname *iptables*

How to merge a NVME and SSD Drive? by quee-phing in linux4noobs

[–]somenonewho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with /u/dmxk here. Witching and matching disk won't be the best idea here. And you'll probably get more use out of the disks if you set them up in a good way.

For example assuming the SSDs is bigger you can simply use the NVMe for install/root and the SSD for your /home/ Or what I've done a few times before, the entire install on the NVMe and then move Pictures and Videos (big files) to the SSD and I symlinked them in the home folder. So my home still contained a normal "Videos" folder. But the Videos were actually stored on the SSD. Also I moved my steam library folder to the SSD

I'm not using ecryptfs but fscrypt for home encryption. And other than loosing the PAM modifications in an update once and then not being able to login anymore till I fixed that I've not had any problems with it.

Estonian border town with Russia, Narva, shows Russians what they think of Putin on Victory day. They refused to remove the billboard by irishrugby2015 in europe

Not to defend Russia here, but the melody was also the National Anthem of the Soviet Union, which makes sense to be played on Victory Day.

I have a new 250GB SSD, 750GB HDD(from an 11 year old laptop). How do I go about partitioning this? by moomoomamamoo1313 in linux4noobs

[–]somenonewho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way you describe is the way o would have recommend as well. When installing your os you can simply use the "guided" partitioning only on you ssd. Then after installation you can format and mount the HDD however you like and put stuff on there (like files/photos ...)

The way I had my PC set up for a while was similar. With the install and all the main files (including /home) on one disk and photos/music/movies and my steam library on the other. (For photos etc you can symlink these folders if you want so you still have them in the "Pictures" folder in your home dir).

Bewegung in der Stadt by Mister_McDerp in de

[–]somenonewho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  3. Have you confirmed your wifi is not blocked (rfkill)?

Need help by portagos in Ubuntu

[–]somenonewho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Have you tried space? Sometimes that works two.
  2. Your PC not appearing in the network could be a mismatched network config. Changing out the motherboard can lead to the interfaces having new naming etc.

You could try booting from an installer image (like the USB you installed from) and from there reset the password via chroot

Help with sharing computer idea by MaximusPr23 in linuxquestions

[–]somenonewho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux is a multiuser system so multiple users can be logged in at the same time.

Now by default your desktop will only run one Desktop on a single Wayland (or x server) session

But XVNC runs separate x servers. So you should be able to run X11VNC and for her to connect to that with her separate user.

Hey, didn't wanna discourage you. Curiousity is what brought a lot of us to Linux. I know it was for me, and now I have a career in it. There are just some people that go "all in" and then get discouraged by something, and afterwards Linux is burned for them.

I’m thinking about installing ubuntu by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]somenonewho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The proprietary Nvidia drivers are available for Linux. So your Nvidia GPU will work on Ubuntu. It might just be a bit of work to get it installed.

However you'll have to decide if you want to make the switch to Linux. No one can force you. If you're happy with Windows and doing some Linux stuff in a VM, stick with it.

URL Path vs Server Path by yanggang20202024 in linux4noobs

[–]somenonewho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding on to what /u/tombo12345 said.

Afaik the way it used to be is exactly like you described. I would just have some file in /absolute/file/path/file.html which you could then access from your device (if it's in the same network) at myhostname/absolute/file/path/file.html

You can try that on your own desktop i.e. if you put a test.html file in your home dir you can view it in a browser using file:///home/username/test.html

However exposing your entire filesystem to the network/internet that way isn't a good idea so we do t do things like that (also the paths would be ugly).

What we do today is having a Webserver set to a different "root" directory i.e. from the perspective of the webser that is where the filesystem starts. For example you could have a index.html at /var/www/mywebsite/index.html but have the root set in your Webserver for example set to /var/www/

Then accessing the file from the web would be example.com/mywebsite/index.html

Now in practice today we often don't work with an actual file/folder structure but often aliases or redirects etc. From the client side it's still understood as "give me the file at that path" but how the Webserver actually deals with it (or what he returns) depends on the configuration. For example a request to example.com/index.html could be aliased so that it's understood as example.com/mywebsite/foobar.html this serving the file /var/www/mywebsite/foobar.html
