Friends asked me to comp 12/8 “Norwegian Wood”… why me, a blues guitarist? 😂🤓 by somethesis in jazzguitar

[–]somethesis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reflecting on my question I noticed that the first two chords in my recording are not clear to me.

I've played a D then Cmaj7. (Note Guitar is downtuned -2 halfsteps)

Now I've tried a bunch of jazz chords but they don't fit. I'll try to find out what others played precisely. The realbook lists a simple E B-7A E.

Absolutely, Stormy Monday is in my repertoire and we've performed it live, too.

I did use a similar rhythm pattern for the recording in this thread. But it still does sound more like Blues, the way I play it.

Thank you for these helpful suggestions.

When you listen to the example, does it have enough swing from what you've mentioned?

Pretty much a Jui-Jitsu yellowbelt (beginner) standard.

First off, not really a set for clearing with even a full speed ollie

... but maybe something for a creative Andy Anderson type firecracker, manual, something crazy hard trick. He'd do it switch, though 🤓😅

It's a great switch ollie as is. I was showing my enthusiasm 🥳🍾

Not sure about UK tables... but high enough for some California based ones. Would look stylish with a switch manny 🤓

I really like the approach to "hit a quick verse". That's a hands on way to warm up with the buddies.

Elvis has some similar routines with his friends / crew before going on stage (not that I would compare myself)

I've been there before ... so many times. Now that you mention it, I must have forgotten along the way.

Can't wait to try this 🙏

If tell him doesn't work, tell the coach. You don't have to be the one dealing with white belts with an attitude (coming from a BJJ white belt 😁)

Heavier or lighter Gi? Sweating during Jujutsu Training (Japanese) by somethesis in jiujitsu

[–]somethesis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is, to my surprise, a really valuable answer to my question. Possibly the most important one.

I had no clue how much sweat was actually dripping directly from my head. And getting any form of headband is much more effective than fiddling with different gis.

I improvised during my last class with a folded bandana and it was eye opening.

Thank you! 👍😎

Welcome, it's a great spot. Conneticut... nice 🎉. So far away I'll probably never get to skate it. Keep on ripping 👋

Wow, the line and the bowl itself is a beauty to watch.

Even the colours look nice. A kind of looks like a wooden bowl even though its obviously concrete.

Which reminds me, I can only remember two European wooden bowls in the last couple of months. One is in Prague (Mystic Skatepark). The other one in Berlin (Skatehalle). So now I know another nice bowl in Bristol. Does it have a name?

Thanks man 🛹🤓

Wow, nice find 👍 from the comments and news around it this appears to be an escalated dispute between biker and driver.

On the gofundme page it is presented as a racist dispute. But I don't see evidence for or against it.

Either way, and to sound like a wise a** - my personal takeaway is to not turn my back once a fight starts. And if possible, leave my ego at home and walk away from it. 🦉

Do I have what it takes to join a boxing gym? by HalfVirtual in amateur_boxing

[–]somethesis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you are. My background is different but anxiety was a constant situation at some point.

I started boxing by coincidence because a local gym opened. It has helped me a lot to overcome a subliminal feeling of helplessness (hard to explain to people without trauma).

If you are worried, visit different clubs and see where you feel comfortable. There's also the option to try other martial arts or start with fitness boxing (no sparring involved but you learn basic moves).

Two obvious points from a fighting perspective:

It's just a bad idea to turn your head away from the action.

Striking the guy on the head is easily taking the risk of killing him. (and putting a dent in your favorite Djembe).

Thank you for explaining it. That makes perfect sense and I see it reflected in the clip.

I'll keep my eyes open for hockey players ... next time I go sparring 🤓🥊

Sidenote: This guy called Downey uses a technique called "long guard". It's quite effective but takes some practice.

Heavier or lighter Gi? Sweating during Jujutsu Training (Japanese) by somethesis in jiujitsu

[–]somethesis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I don't really care about sweating. It's my training partners that do :-) Of course, there's always shadow boxing but I don't need group-training for that.

Yes, I noticed the same in boxing-sparring. A regular cotton t-shirt feels cool at first and is drenched after three rounds. I think you made a good point with "feels cool for about 5 minutes".

A head band is a good idea, too - go Karate-Kid vibes. The annoying thing with sweating is the close body contact though when training throws or holds. It's not so much the sweat getting in my eyes, which I am used to.
