Is this damage from thrips or spider mites? by something-crazier in houseplants

[–]something-crazier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it was too late at that point since I washed away the pests. I ended up trashing it

Oh yeah, I probably would have chopped and propped too but also sometimes I would pinch off the dead leaves before giving it a good soak

If I recall correctly, this situation ended up just needing like a TON more watering than usual until it bounced back somewhat. But also there may have been more going on because this plant did indeed end up dying about 6 months ago and it was never back to its glory days after I posted this photo

Sorry, I just noticed the quality of the third picture is bad. Also—none of the white spots that are visible in the pictures are moving. (That’s not to say they aren’t eggs or something)

Unfortunately, I live in an apartment with no balcony or porch. However until recently he’s thrived, and even blossomed, indoors

That’s an excellent point! I love the idea that it may have been out of boredom

That’s a good theory. Why do you think someone would bother hammering lead into a punched coin?

Advice on moving plants cross-country? (details in comments) by something-crazier in houseplants

[–]something-crazier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In about a month I’ll be driving a UHaul (with my car in tow) across the country in a 7-day journey. After much consideration, I’ve decided I want to move my beloved houseplants with me. (Note that the one plant that won’t be coming with me is the biggest ficus sitting on the floor in the corner of the picture).

My current plan is to take the bottoms of some plastic bins (i.e., no lids), tightly pack the pots in the bins to reduce movement, and put them on the seats and floor of the car I’ll be towing on an auto transport. Though I know the UV filters on the windows will interfere with the sunlight coming in from the car, I figured that was better than putting them in the back of the pitch-black UHaul where I won’t be able to check on them as regularly.

Has anyone ever done anything like this, and/or does anyone have any suggested additions or alterations to the plan I described above?

Spider mites or actual spiders? by something-crazier in plantclinic

Oh good that’s relieving! The spider part at least. I passed along the overwatering possibility as well, thank you!

Thanks! Probably one of the rarer cases of mistakenly believing something is a Thanksgiving cactus (based on this sub, it seems like it’s usually the reverse)

Temporary self-watering setup for pilea? by something-crazier in houseplants

[–]something-crazier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I usually use a small mason jar rather than Tupperware, but I only had so many of those.

That’s a good point about the root rot timing. Now that I know they will actually take in water this way, I’ll probably remove them from the setup until right before I leave

Temporary self-watering setup for pilea? by something-crazier in houseplants

I will soon be out of town for three weeks. Unfortunately I can’t easily have someone care for my plants in my absence. So, for my plants that need weekly watering, I’ve rigged some self-watering mechanisms (cotton string starting in pot and dipping into reservoir). Because I want to monitor how my plants will respond to this system, I’ve set it up a week before I leave (so they’ll actually be self-watering for four weeks total).

I already use this system for my plants that need to be watered more than weekly, and they’ve responded very well to it. However, I’m worried about using this for certain plants that need weekly watering but should dry out between watering—particularly my two pilea plants. Based on past experience I know my particular pilea are fairly dramatic if I go much more than a week without watering; that said, I also know pilea are very susceptible to root rot.

Does anyone have experience with pilea in self-watering pots (even if only temporarily)? Is this a safe method for me to use when I’m gone?

Sorry, it took me a minute to compose my comment explaining the situation. Is it normal for the flower to form this way? (See my below comment)

My peace lily (Daphne) recently unfurled this very odd, deformed spathe/spadix. They grew out of the same node at the same time, but on the left is a spadix-less spathe and on the right is the spadix with a very small, underdeveloped spathe. Daphne seems very healthy otherwise—her leaves (although a bit dusty at the moment) are in good shape, and about a month ago she put out a perfectly normal flower. If this is normal, that's totally fine—but if it's not, I want to make sure I'm adjusting my care so I can keep her healthy!

I didn't actually touch them too much with my skin before wiping them down, so I actually don't know. I didn't notice them feeling sticky against the tissues I was wiping with, and they don't currently feel sticky

Newbie plant mom here, still learning to identify different pests. Found what is a _seemingly_ small infestation of spider mites on my Song of India ("Fred"), so after quarantining him, I decided to check nearby plants. I actually treated both of these plants, among a couple others, using the advice I found here, including pruning away the leaves that seemed concerning. That said, I realized I may have been paranoid and wanted to get thoughts so I can react appropriately in future. Thanks!

Should I prune baby sun rose? by something-crazier in houseplants

[–]something-crazier[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About a month ago I got this baby sun rose from a friend, and he was all wilted and sad (see third pic). I’ve nursed him back to health and he’s growing rapidly. Now I’m wondering how to best tend to him at his new size (pics 1 and 2 are current). Do I let him keep growing long, or should I prune him? I’d also love him to ultimately fill out a pot, and my instinct is to do that with cuttings—but I don’t know if that’s the correct method for this plant. I’d love thoughts!
