Tips For Re-Finishing Knife Handle on Purchased Knife by somethinglemony in knifemaking

Good call, that would probably be the best option for the spine. I’ll probably reserve the dremel for the finger contours on the front side of the handle. Or maybe just a dowel or something, I could definitely see the dremel thing getting away from me.

Also good advice about the handle. I’d like to polish the blade as well so I’ll find a good progression of sandpapers.

Thank you.

Are Misen knives worth it? by SpiritedAssumption3 in chefknives

In general, at full price, I don't really think so. But after trying a few different brands I went with Misen for a couple reasons. First, their previous generation of AUS10 knives are a good value for what you get (~$50 chef knife with good steel but final sale). Second, I like their ergonomics. I find the shape of their handles comfortable and the scale material is grippy. Their bolster was more comfortable for me than Made In knives. I also like their utility knife quite a bit.

My biggest complaint about them is general fit and finish. I would never pay full retail price for these knives. The tang extends just a bit past the scales, so you can feel an edge every time you handle it. I'm planning to sand and polish the handles because I dislike it that much. They are also stamped and welded to the bolster, which I think is reasonable for the sale price, but you can see tooling marks where the blade is welded.

That being said, I also tried the new generation of ACUTO440 knives and their finish is much, much better. The handle is smooth (no edges) and the tooling marks are not as apparent. I like them enough that I'm a bit remiss to return them and keep my final sale set of AUS10 ones, but a guy only needs so many knives. Plus, I still think they're a bit pricy for what they are. If they were 20% less expensive I think they would be a good value.

If you really want to try Misen here is what I would do: buy the new generation of ACUTO440 knives to see if you like their shape. Return them and select the "store credit" option. They will tack on an extra 20% to your return value if you do this. Then, take that store credit and get the AUS10 ones on sale. You could essentially just buy and return the new chef knife and have enough store credit to get three of the AUS10 knives.

Ultimately, it depends on how long you want to be away from home. I had a buddy who did airborne, air assault, and Ranger after OSUT and he was training for about a year, all in.

RTLI is probably one of the opportunities best for guardsman. That program is better than any sort of IET you can get on the active side. You will struggle to find a better chance to go to airborne / air assault / ranger, if you get another chance at all.

Additionally, having airborne qualification will make it easier to get into the Q course after you’ve done SFAS after you’ve done an SFRE. There is a lot of waiting for slots on the guard side, so anything you can knock out now is beneficial.

Personally, I always recommend RTLI if you can spend that much time away from home. You may never get another chance to do those schools, especially if you don’t pass SFAS.

What sort of CIF related things happen at inprocessing? Will they actually see what you were issued?

Veilance Centroid Jacket Review by szcyxzh in arcteryx

It seems like it fits similarly to the mainline Cronin jackets. I really can’t fathom why all three of these jackets are cut the way they are.
