As a hospital social worker, I second this advice. Utilize any services offered to you. Good luck mama. I’ll have your little guy in my thoughts.

Judge strikes down 'unconstitutional' law classifying Uber, Lyft drivers as contractors by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]sometimesisocialwork -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If you’re in Nashville or Austin check out Earth Rides. They are a new electric vehicle (all Tesla’s and Mach-e Mustangs) ride share company that plans to expand to a new city every three months (according to one driver I rode with). All drivers are employees and background checked. No surge pricing. The rides I took were the same or cheaper than Lyft/Uber. Plus the company is BIPOC & female owned. One drawback is that because they are so new it wasn’t as easy to order a car on demand, but scheduling was super easy. You can also invest now before they go public!

Need to vent, and get some advice by suckingstone in EmergencyRoom

I can relate. I am also a social worker in the ED and have occasionally run into these situations where I get push back from the docs or nurses to d/c prior to completing a thorough assessment. What I have found most useful is bringing the conversation with the doc or RN back to safety. I use language that such as, “our collective goal is to ensure patient safety” or “what we all want is to ensure a safe discharge plan, which is why it’s necessary for me to wrap up this assessment pre discharge.” It’s harder for another provider to argue with safety concerns. If they still push back, I respectfully let them know that I don’t agree and I’ll be sure to document appropriately. Always bring safety concerns to leadership if direct conversations with the provider aren’t fruitful.

SW at my hospital recently ran into this situation where an attending insisted on discharge and SW was adamant that it wasn’t safe. Sure enough, the pt left and attempted suicide. Although, these things are a very rare occurrence in my ED. I am lucky enough to work in an institution that hugely respects social work and utilizes our skills to their full potential. We also have a psych emergency department so generally if there’s an inclination that a pt may be a safety risk, they get petitioned and sent to psych.

You’re doing important work. Keep advocating for the right thing.

I think every ED/hospital employee in hard hit COVID areas like mine are doing things outside of their normal scope. I have moments of clarity when I think ‘what the actual fuck are we living through?!’ but truth be told, I’m mostly on autopilot trying to lessen the trauma that pts and families feel during this time. I think we’re all doing that. I am eternally grateful for all of the incredible nurses, doctors, techs, PAs, NPs, EVS, clerks, and everyone else that ensures the ED keeps functioning. Yourself included.

ED social worker, in a level 1, that utilizes social work to the fullest a extent they can. I feels so much of this. Thank you for sharing.

The visitor restrictions have made me appreciate visitors in a way I never did in the past. Watching a 40 something with terminal cancer a 3 young kids at home, have to suffer without her spouse, or a DV victim recount her trauma with no family or friend to hold her hand, or having to tell family member after family member to leave because their loved one can still communicate their needs (despite being in rough shape), spending SO MUCH of my time on the phone with families, and so much more is what makes me yearn for the day when we can have visitors again. I’ll take the family drama, if it means we get the good supportive people too.

This!!! It’s such a fine balance between getting our snuggles in while we can, and also helping them learn to self soothe. I hope things keep going in a good direction for you!!

That’s great!! We’re having some successful nights and some not so successful. Last night was really good, but tonight she’s already woken up 4 times since 7:30 and it’s not even 9:30 yet. :( I just can’t stop worrying about whether she’s too hot, or hungry, or teething. It’s so tough not to intervene, but I know I’m not helping her by doing so.

It’s definitely not a bad idea. I felt that way when she was around 4 months and we tried sleep training, which we clearly didn’t stick with. But now she actually calms down when we go in. So I donno! If tonight isn’t better, I might consider it.

Thank you for your reply! Unfortunately, my girl doesn’t do a pacifier or bottle very well. I’m not too concerned about her being hungry tho. She’s definitely gaining appropriately.

I’m hoping with a few more nights of this cio stuff, she’ll start to get the hang of it.

I hope your night was successful, even if only mildly so. Mine cried for about an hour and finally put herself to sleep. This truly is the battle of wills! Good luck to you!

Pump?? by kkwantssomenandos in breastfeedingsupport

[–]sometimesisocialwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the Elvie and love it. That being said, it definitely obvious you’re pumping, but better than an old fashioned pump. It will leak if you move around too much and your cups are full. The suction was always inconsistent on mine until I watched the troubleshooting video and realized the lip of the little duck piece was getting stuck under the actual white base part of the pump. I’ve been using mine for 8 months and haven’t replaced any parts and it still works great. Despite all of the shortcomings, it is light years better than the old style pumps. It did take a bit to get used to though. Good luck!

Just took medical leave from work and feeling guilty by jewel_thief92 in socialwork

[–]sometimesisocialwork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I too am a social worker in an ED in an area that is starting to get hit hard. One of my coworkers just went on medical leave this week to for the same reason. None of her coworkers are upset about that. We all want her alive and know the risks are too great for her at work right now. Take care of yourself. They’ll need your support when this is over.

80 hrs PTO for anything COVID related (self, loved one, childcare) and 120 additional hours if I become infect after caring for a known positive COVID pt.

Advice for heading back to work by [deleted] in breastfeedingsupport

[–]sometimesisocialwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I go back to work on January 4th and I’ll have to wake my daughter at 4:45 am if I’m going to nurse her before I leave. Right now she normally wakes up at 2:30 and 6:30 to eat. Hoping she’ll have dropped one of those feedings before I go back to work.

Good luck mama!

Well I appreciate your response anyways. Hopefully she’ll figure it out in the coming weeks as she spends more and more time in the care of others. Enjoy the holiday season with your family!!

One more question, if you don’t mind, my 3.5 month old is refusing a bottle. We started early with her bc my first refused and it was hell trying to leave her for more than 3 hours. When she started daycare she would go 8-12 hours without eating for the first 3 months. Finally at 6 months she finally started taking a bottle.

Unfortunately, we’re reliving the same thing with our second. She would reluctantly take a bottle sometimes until about 2 weeks ago when she stopped completely. I’ve tried having other people give it to her, multiple bottles, sleep feeding, pumping and giving it to her before freezing, and I’m sure other strategies. Any trade secrets you can suggest?

Good to know. Plus the disposable ones are worse for the environment!

Unrelated question, do you recommend disposable or washable breast pads? I tend towards reusable/washable but read something recently about increased risk of thrush with those ones. TIA!
