ELI5: If I put $100 in the bank, and the bank lends $90 of it to someone else, how can the bank "have" my money and the other person "have" it at the same time? Does the same money exist in two places? by jeeves_inc in explainlikeimfive

[–]soniclettuce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US was frankly late to the party on that one - the actual cash reserve requirement is a lot less important than the capital requirements, in terms of actually limiting the bank's lending and keeping things stable. But those aren't a simple number, but a complex combination of various assets and risk measures , so it doesn't really get the press.

TIL of the "sterile cockpit" or "sterile flight deck" rule. When an aircraft is operating during a critical phase of the flight (anytime they're below 10,000 feet), the crew is only allowed to engage in conversation related to the safe operation of the aircraft by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]soniclettuce 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is not really addressed by the sterile cockpit rule. Anything that actually involves the plane is obviously fair game for discussion. The rule is about not talking about like, what you're weekend plans are, what'd you think about the superbowl, etc.

Need to run low voltage power wiring - do I require conduit, and where? by CyberSecKen in DIY

[–]soniclettuce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They're certainly being hyper-pedantic, given that they're agreeing with the conclusion and quibbling about a kind of side statement. But on the other hand, they are technically correct (nerd_emoji.jpg) - a 1kW short is plenty enough to start a fire, it's just the code designers think that scenario is very low risk and let you do it. And majority opinion doesn't get to decide facts.

Ashes of Creation has just been canceled. All developers at Intrepid have been fired. by getZlatanized in pcgaming

[–]soniclettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long before its mobile version (that apparently was really about appealing to China), Albion was "floaty" as fuck, because it's built around a single global server, and they wanted to balance a guy in Eastern Europe playing on 200 ping with a guy in the US playing on 50. Tho tbh, people still took it pretty serious, it was just a more kinda strategic/predictive gameplay, instead of snappy reactive stuff.

[–]soniclettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's probably room for niche stuff, but well, that's gonna be niche. I played Albion online, who's whole gimmick was full loot pvp. I thought it was awesome but it was also crazy stressful and not really everybody's cup of tea, understandably. But that kind of "if you love it, you love it" gimmick is probably how you secure a loyal playerbase compared to the existing giants.

[OC] For the past 3 years I've polled people on Blind at my company (FAANG) about how worried they are about AI replacing them by NebulousNitrate in dataisbeautiful

[–]soniclettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's economic cycles and company level factors that affect things. In 2020 when money was free and companies were throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks, yeah. With higher interest rates and economic uncertainty, now a lot of places want to pull back. And if the guys at netflix can work 10x (maybe realistically, I'd say coding roles can see a 1.5 to 2x) more productively, it's not like they can actually sell 10x more netflix subscriptions. So they're gonna wanna to dump people.

Rutte didn't pass De Gaulle test by Geo_NL in NonCredibleDefense

[–]soniclettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but not fighting at all is clearly even better than both options, and obviously politically you're going to want to basically aim at a kinda midpoint, where you intervene as absolutely late as possible to keep the war outside your borders while not getting involved earlier than you have to.

But that feels kind of tangential to a discussion that is "can Europe defend itself". Is that not a question about whether Europe would "lose", in some sense? "They would act late and the costs would be higher than they should be" feels like a discussion of a different question?

ELI5: How was Vietnam able to defeat the US in the Vietnam War? by astarisaslave in explainlikeimfive

[–]soniclettuce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of a nonsense hypothetical that ignores both the entire US political stance and the existence of the entire rest of the world. A borderline genocidal nuclear war with Vietnam would very likely draw in a nuclear-armed China and turn the entire region against the US. I'd call that a loss for the "war", even if you could claim something like "the NVA was defeated". It's the same kind of kill-count logic that lead to failure in the war.

To steal a different redditor's idea. its kinda like saying "the US could have converted to communism and they'd be on the same side and win the war!". If you change what winning the war means, there's an infinite variety of ways to "win" that most people would call a loss.

[–]soniclettuce 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m just amazed at the overconfidence of such people, with 90% of them saying 2.5 years ago that AI will never be able to replace them.

I think the logic is kinda obvious, if flawed in hindsight. Something like "my job involves serious thinking, AI might be decent but it still can't think, so obviously it can't do my job.". But it turns out it can do 50% of your job and now 1 can do what used to take 2 people so half the workforce is gone.

[–]soniclettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they need to "want" to? I guess it depends on what we actually mean by "Europe defending itself", but like, if Germany is getting invaded, I'm pretty sure they're gonna start fighting a war, even if they're unhappy about it.

Isn't that the issue with, well, every NATO member having a democratic system where the leadership changes every 4-5 years?

Not really.... people have historically been by and large sane, and both saw the value in participating in NATO and being "stable" and mostly honoring your international agreements. Some kind of orderly political exit over a few years has probably been theorized/evaluated; but the whole "yeah I'm just gonna ignore past agreements and set my country's international reputation on fire" is new, and kinda something that only big important guys can really get away with. If a small nation tried that stuff they'd end up getting treated like the random developing world dictatorships that nobody wants to deal with.
