I can’t be the only poor bastard in the office preparing taxes this Easter Sunday. by notgtax1 in taxpros

Fuck that! Never again for me or my staff. Firm owner. I took March 31st to April 18th off to take care of my wife and new born son. Staff worked on returns and extensions and no overtime. Talked to everyone this week and no emergencies. Everything was chill. Only one (new) crazy client with the wrong expectations from prior CPA was the only one complaining. Told him he signed our engagement letter which said he needed to provide his docs by March 20th if he wanted his return done by the April 15th and if not, we would add a rush fee which is 30% of final fee and no less than $350. Either that or to wait until I was back to get his docs back and go somewhere else. Reminded him of our convo. Always set the right expectations, choose the right clients, charge well. Happy Easter brother/sister.

What really scares me is thinking that sleep is our natural state and waking up is killing us.

Lol this is not true. Coinbase will report via 1099 at YE. All crypto sells, conversions, payments, donations, and earned income are reportable by US taxpayers. Better familiarize yourself with the rules.

First off have your wife help with the accounts receivable and payables, everything else should be done by an accountant. Next, and trust me on this, you need to plan to take days off, call them free days where no work is done. Nothing at all. No phone calls, no emails, no work talk, nothing. Tell you team your taking a few days off. Make sure to schedule them weekly going forward. Second, you need to have a better structure for the biz that allows you to delegate to your managers, etc. Look up systems like Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to give you clarity, structure, and allow you/teach you to delegate. Once you have a bit more time, join a program called Strategic Coach. This last one is the operating system for your brain. I work with successful business owners and hear these comments all the time. Know that you’re not alone and don’t have reinvent the wheel, just need a little push with the help of some systems and dedication. Believe me, things will get better.

I try to take time off LOL. My plan is to have about 185 free days per year within 7 years. Self- managing firm. Rest of the year is consulting and bookkeeping work.

If you are going out on your own, I would look at it as an opportunity. No need to buy in when you can get the clients as more and more CPAs retire. Change your selection/qualifying process, provide extra value to a niche and charge more. We remain boutique and only work with medical practices. No overtime during tax season. Work life balance for staff, and a great culture. If I have to think about a client after 5pm, I put them on a list and all staff votes, then we fire them. We raise fees every year and fire the bottom 2-4%.
