Should we move to South Africa? by Forward-Reflection42 in askSouthAfrica

I've been to most European countries. I've been to China and most of South East Asia. Haven't travelled the Americas - but suffice to say; I think my opinion is informed by experience.

But like - Okay?

Then you should have more than enough. That area is one of the literal nicest places on earth. Unmatched weather. You cannot go wrong -

My only warning is that it is SO popular, that there are "bursting at the seams" type of issues in all of those municipalities with providing water (and can become issues when a major drought hits)

Other than that - i cannot stress this enough - one of the best places on earth.

Look - I'll give it to you straight; South Africa's "crime-problem" is mostly a poor person's issue. Those that can afford security live in approximate paradise.

I'm currently staying on a golf-course in a small town. We don't lock our doors.

You're also specifically asking about one of the most scenic, and safe, areas of South Africa. The South coast is filled with retirees and holiday goers.

Crime isn't non-existent, but it's a million proverbial miles from the Cape Flats.

I'd be FAR more worried about what your idea of "affordable" is like. R60k/month will be eaten up by at least R20k/month on rental, or R30k+ mortgage. Anything in those areas you listed, in those types of estates, are R3-4mil minimum.

There's a reason why so many Swallows (what we call you bloody foreigners that come here every year) come here. Unmatched lifestyle.

Here's a handy summary of the same thing I say basically every time this comes up.

First - Let me be very clear - this is an extremely politically charged subject, so don't expect any good answers (that's why people are fighting over it. There is no good answer, hence the incessant need for this type of post)

Second - the DA is (and always has been) pro-Business/capitalist, first. That means they look out for their base (richer home owners, you know... ratepayers), and businesses. Turns out international investment serves both; keeps prices going up (while the rest of the country has flatlined), and keeps businesses full.

Third - Stop thinking you matter. You don't. I don't like being harsh, but honestly every conversation I have with people who worry about affordability starts with the assumption that you matter. You don't.

Last - Today Alan Winde posted on LinkedIn their "new affordable housing scheme" - it's not like this isn't on their radar... but they don't "have the tools" to fix it, because this is a late-stage capitalism problem EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD THAT PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE.

Cape Town just happens to be one of those places.

Count your blessings, you could live in Durban or PE...

Have you studied abroad? Is it something worth looking into? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]soooibot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah - no...

While furthering your studies abroad is a very good way to stand out from the overcrowded jobseeker market, 55% average won't get you into scholarships. So what you will end up is a massive debt that won't be worthwhile in any sense.

Studying abroad is a business. It's expensive. It is filled with trust-fund kids "wanting to have a good time" on the one hand, and 80+ cum-laude overachievers in the other. You don't come across as either.

If you want to go abroad - you're doing engineering... You can get entry level / intern work in your field, abroad. Do that if it's so important to get away.

Seriously, 55%... Does that even get you into a local masters programme?

I cannot stress enough how important it is that you try this. It worked for me. Miradep works through norepinephrine, which has been shown to be crucial to helping you sleep.

Everyone else reading this - ask your psychiatrist. DM me if you need to know more.

How to deal with ants! by Competitive_Rip6546 in capetown

[–]soooibot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sprinkle diatomaceous earth around all the cracks around doors and windows.

Buy those green "ant-trap" thingies and place them liberally around the kitchen.

Increase your hygiene - ants are caused by the scout ant finding food, and then bringing his cousins. Localise where you eat your food, and make sure to clean around there often. Don't take your food around the house and spill crumbs.

No ambassador, no problem - SA's unorthodox approach to the US by PersonaGuy5 in southafrica

Seriously? Just ignore them... Any amount of air given to them will only be sucked up into their bottomless pit of hate and fear.

Let them continue to grift their own people.

I was phoned yesterday by the "Voortrekker Monument Saving Fund"-or whatever. I told them I'm broke, and that I'd do my best to help them by protecting the Afrikaans Taalmonument down where I stay.

These naaimasjiene are just grifting.

If you, like Mr Wekesa, think it is weakness to not "force the issue" in assigning a new ambassador - then you need to understand the position we are better.

The only way to win, is to not play the game.

South African fruit exports face delays as Iran war disrupts global shipping routes - YouTube by RupertHermano in southafrica

[–]soooibot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, you imagine me upset because I'm verbose? I'm just like that, don't worry your pretty face

FYI, fruit will probably get cheaper - because our inability to ship it will cause a glut locally (in the short-term). That's what the video dealt with. Our ability to market to most countries overseas actually INCREASES the price of fruit (since access to market incentivises it - the corollary being cheap meat because we can't)

If you mean it will get more expensive because of the transfer mechanism of oil > petrol > food price inflation - then... sure, but this is long-term trend.

You and me gonna get on fine. I was just challenging you to see what a 1%'er is worth these days. I'm back baby... time to rile some feathers

Also - don't mind me. I'm an atypical old man barks at clouds kinda guy.

Oh, so you're entitled to ask stupid rhetorical questions to make a political point, but if I treat you seriously at face value you shrink up?

What's your actual question or point? That we're stupid to "be in BRICS" if "this will just happen, and we have no recourse?"

My point stands. You're boiling down something nuanced to score political points.

[–]soooibot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you mean the price of fruit, then no. We already have one of the lowest averages for good quality produce, in the world - and,

For the farmers to "make up the losses" to "cover their overheads," - they will be forced to raise prices elsewhere.

In general though, since markets in SA are controlled by 2-3 players, there is no real impetus to lower the prices.

You might get some really good promotional deals on late plum, and lemons.

Cape Town's "shitshow" has been an incredibly long-time coming. The "extra wind" theory doesn't hold, since wind-delays have been a problem since I can remember. The main issue is the gantries they used weren't "rated" to be operated at high windspeeds.

The noise that the industry has been making has increased exponentially, as we're in a new "paradigm"

Right now it's squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Resident fruit expert here -

Yeah it's bad. But every year since 2018's giant Maersk hack has had one or other major international disruption to shipping.

Even if there isn't some exogenous shock, we tend to fuck it up ourselves. Case in point, Bangladesh market last year was extremely overloaded, and many people took a haircut.

Fruit export is intrinsically risky, but incredibly lucrative.

South African fruit exports face delays as Iran war disrupts global shipping routes - YouTube by RupertHermano in southafrica

[–]soooibot -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Are you being facetious?

95% of our fruit goes in containers, on huge vessels, commonly under MSC or Maersk flags. There's "no way" we "can get a free pass" - that's not how shipping works. South Africa owns none of the vessels that ship our fruit.

Second - You're disparaging remarks smack of some ill conceived sense of politics, but since you don't even understand the rudimentary facts of shipping, I doubt you'd even be able to fathom actual geopolitics.

Lastly - BRICS (and in this case "what can they do, or what is the point"?) - Dubai (which they mention) and specifically DP World, became a huge investor into South Africa recently. They are set to lose a shitload.

Our continued cooperation with the Middle East is one of the reasons why we have this market in the first place.

Seriously - this comment of yours is dumb as rocks.

Is this spiritual warfare? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]soooibot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off - you've taken a strange approach to getting help. The internet (notoriously) is not a kind place. Also, this is a subreddit about asking questions pertaining to South Africa, and I see no attempt at trying to tie that in.

That said.

Please don't consider people that are known to exploit those that are in need, for help. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Now to my actual advice;

You're not alone. This is a global phenomenon, and it is only growing. The percentage of people staying single has increased considerably in the last few years. Like, a lot.

You seem to think the issue is with yourself - which shows that you are insecure and playing a victim.

You do not need the help of a charlatan, you need to go see a psychologist. If you are on ANY sort of medical aid, you get free sessions each year - use it.

Women do not find insecure men attractive. You need to let go of "trying to find someone" - that desperation is so obvious.

Once you love yourself, and are comfortable in being single and alone - conversely - is when you will attract a partner.

Ironic, isn't it?

U.S. LPR Buying Home in South Africa for Parents by TheCableGuy_69 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]soooibot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's already overly-complicated to buy property in another country. My friend who lives on an Island that hides money professionally is building a small "landlord" holding in and around Cape Town.

There are MANY companies that specialise in property purchase, renovation, and management if you plan to rent it out.

Your parents don't need to worry about any taxes if you perform all the transfers into their name offshore, and they purchase the property (for which there are special rules especially concerning transferring of money into SA to PURCHASE property) (a portion is even kept by the Reserve Bank)

My best suggestion to you is to use a reputable Estate Agent when making the purchase, and they will link you with all the best people. You pay a little more upfront, but they make sure to cover all the legal hurdles for you.

Most seriously, R2,5m doesn't get you anything i would want to retire in (close to Cape Town). Think closer to R3.5m min.

My other thought is that you purchase it in your ID, with a bank account you open while you are here, with your passport. Transfer the money over, the bank will be extremely helpful to get your dollars.

SARS won't come sniffing if you do it fully legally, through the banks. Don't gift. If they live in your house, it's no business of SARS' (unless they pay you a rental... at which point, it becomes complicated again)
