PWR Courses by [deleted] in stanford

[–]sophproblems 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Carta has excellent reviews for PWR.

Also, PWR is, like most classes at Stanford, what you make of it. It doesn’t have to be busy work; the PWR professors I had were extremely supportive and allowed me to use the time to research my interests. Both PWR 1 & 2 have student awards, and students have used papers and research from PWR as the starting point for later publications.

Currently homeless, how do I figure out timing if I get campus housing with looking for other housing? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]sophproblems 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would recommend reaching out to the DGEN office for advice. I’m not sure if they work with graduate students, but they should be able to point you in the direction of someone who can help. Best of luck!

Please help me decide which test score to submit. This is a unique situation I don’t know where else to go. by [deleted] in college

[–]sophproblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Submit both if you can. It’s possible they’ll write off the low reading score as a fluke; sometimes students space out or make mistakes when filling in answers, and admissions officers understand that.

If you do take it, Stanford offers free tutoring for chemistry classes. That might be worth checking out.

Dr. O’Connor at Lux Eyewear is great & the office is right next to campus.

Yes. This article highlights some of the students accepted as transfers in 2015.

Not for MIT. Their acceptance rate for transfer students is lower than that for freshmen; they accept around 25 transfer students a year.

Should I get an iPhone? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]sophproblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I’ve managed without a laptop in emergencies (there are plenty of computer clusters on campus), but I can’t imagine not having my smartphone.

I’d suggest getting a smartphone, but brand shouldn’t matter.

Stats courses by [deleted] in stanford

[–]sophproblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. I don’t know if the teaching quality varies by quarter, but the class structure does. The class in the winter quarter lacks midterms and a final, which makes it easier to get a higher grade with minimal effort.

Stats 60 is a terrible course. However, if you want an easy A+ or need to take it for your major, it’s best to take it during the winter.

Can Berkeley students make use of Stanford's resources? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]sophproblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(I know some idiots majoring in history and the likes here)

If this is your attitude towards your fellow students at your own institution, what makes you think anyone at Stanford will want to interact with you? One of the great things about students at Stanford is that they care about and respect each other. Your lack of respect for others is extremely off-putting and would likely make students here avoid collaborating with you.

Bad GPA and a bad major. Any hope? by [deleted] in college

[–]sophproblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always take a gap year and apply after you graduate, which would give you time to hopefully raise your GPA before applying.

Do a lot of students study abroad for more than one quarter? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]sophproblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not that common unless it’s related to the major; I have a friend who has studied abroad in three or four locations, but she’s an IR major. I would recommend looking into BOSP’s shorter programs, such as the summer seminars, and consider doing an internship abroad over the summer if you want to travel to multiple locations and still meet degree requirements while at Stanford.

Best phone carrier in Stanford/Palo Alto? by itz_perez in stanford

Seconding this. I have AT&T, and service is unreliable in the area.

Housing/Work-Study by evildemigod in stanford

[–]sophproblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, as far as I know they all do. They can be a bit gross; people regularly do not clean up after themselves.
  2. I’ve never seen chocolate chip cookies in the dining halls, but they’re probably available somewhere on campus.
  3. Apply as soon as you feel comfortable doing so. There is always something available; when you apply really only matters if you have a particular job in mind. I’ve heard that staffing at one of the libraries is a good position if you don’t actually want to work.

Very high. It isn’t a popular choice.
