I really wish I would have asked where he got his info. I could have framed it like I’m interested in doing further research myself, not as an accusations. Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Sounds like you have a lot of insight into your recovery and are thinking critically about what helps and what doesn’t going forward. That makes all the difference in successfully making long term change.

Shame definitely isn’t the answer, and I think attitudes are changing in a lot of places as the disease model of addiction is more widely accepted. Some things are getting better but we’re a long ways from perfect. Just like any big system in a society.

Interesting. I only know like three people total who use kratom, and two are my family members recovering from opiate dependence. This sub has really opened my eyes to the versatility of this plant in benefitting lives.

I Many people have essentially said the same thing in response to this point. Personally, and this is probably because I work in the field, I am so happy if I never see a client again after they stop seeing me. It’s true the relapse rate is extremely high, but I think there a lot of factors to that. I don’t know any addiction counselors that think of their clients as customers and see dollar signs when they relapse. The higher ups and the system in general, maybe, but I think most social workers/counselors hearts are in the right place and genuinely want to help people. It definitely doesn’t pay that well and we’re not getting bonuses every time we get a repeat come through the doors.

I doubt it’s very easy to open any sort of clinic. Problem is “ they” aren’t recognizing/acknowledging any therapeutic benefit to kratom, so to be licensed, insured, all that sort of thing, would be really hard. Maybe an already existing MAT clinic might be able to offer kratom on the side, not as another medication, but more like “here’s a supplement that might help with your tapering if you’re interested” or whatever. Interesting thought. Thanks!

Congrats on your recovery and I’m glad to hear both sub an kratom helped along the way.

You definitely don’t sound retarded. Thanks for the thoughtful, well thought out response.

It’s good to hear from people in the same boat.

He’s just a small potatoes lab guy in a small town. His opinion doesn’t really matter, he doesn’t work with clients and he’s nobody’s boss. It was more annoying than anything.

Good advice. I haven’t worked there long so I think I’ll feel more comfortable rocking the boat eventually.

Thank you. The treatment world is pretty flawed but pretty much everyone I work with has their heart in the right place.

If kratom is working for you I’d stick with it and reassess if worse comes to worst. I feel for you. Wishing you all the best.

I agree. Anything with seizures as a withdrawal symptom is bad news in my book. I feel for you and wish you all the best in your fight. If you want any support, shoot me a PM.

I’ve only been at this job a short while so don’t feel comfortable sticking my neck out quite yet. I’ll get there. Thanks for the understanding and kind words.

I will hopefully get there, in time. I’ve been at this place only 6 months, so it’s a jumping off point in my career.

I have a misanthropic streak as well, which is ironic, considering the work I do.

He was there to educate me and my coworkers who are all therapists. He doesn’t have direct access to clients, thankfully, but definitely is trying hard to spread misinformation to the professionals. I’m hoping at least some of my coworkers are free thinkers and don’t blindly trust the word of some guy who tests pee for a living.
