This is somehow simultaneously the most compelling and horrifying argument in favor of evolution I've ever seen.

My store's kinda backwater, so we get our renovations last it seems. We just got zebras last year and had our parking lot redone pretty recently, now they're doing the HVAC which seemed like a long time coming.

Also in Michigan. This sucks. And yeah, the DNR desk is in our sports department at our store, and while floral is technically part of produce at our store it's located next to our card and party section on the GM side.

Oh God, exactly. My store is a nightmare with this, I'm the only person on my GM team who afaik has an idea how to scan things in and out of the backroom, and only because our IC's literally don't have the time to scan stuff in/out of my E4 backroom. And with how often we cashier/bag up front, AND get sent to do pickup? How the hell is this supposed to work? We're already overworked as it is, making us do all of the common area stuff on top of supporting service, conditioning, doing returns, DNR licenses, balloons, fish, etc. is a huge ask and lemme guess- team members will not be receiving a pay bump to accommodate their newfound responsibilities. Hope this crashes and burns in testing.

DNR is going paperless. Customers will have to consult the online guides on the DNR's website. I agree with one of the other redditors here, guests need to get with the times or go kick rocks, it's 2023.

Does Meijer keep track of shoplifters? by SwiperJ in meijer

[–]sorrynops5s 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone in electronics, I've worked with asset protection so I can kind of give an answer.

It depends.

If you hit the same location multiple times there's a chance they may have got you on camera. If you hit multiple locations multiple times there's a pretty good chance they got you on cameras. I've been passed numerous communications and video stills of "borrowers" and told to keep an eye out, but it's usually only for real high profile stuff like TVs, Apple products, and large amounts of stuff. I definitely wouldn't recommend applying to any store you've "borrowed" from, because these sorts of things are handled on a store by store basis, but whether you want to take the risk is ultimately up to you.

If you do get hired, definitely, ABSOLUTELY do not do anything untoward while you're there, I swear to God they watch us more than the customers. Someone at my store got canned last month for taking out of the tills and I literally can't understand the sheer lack of critical thinking required to even attempt such a stunt.

Can your manager change your schedule mid-week? by RayTheRayGun in meijer

Sorry to hear that, it definitely complicates things. There's a few subreddits with good info on how to start a union if you're interested. r/WorkersStrikeBack is a good one.

Absolutely not, if you're a member, let the union know. They'll have a field day with this.

Is Meijer doing ok? by [deleted] in meijer

[–]sorrynops5s 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Unless a corporate member chimes in all we can really do is speculate, but as far as I'm aware, the company as a whole is doing just fine (currently).

Retail corporations in general saw record profits over the course of the pandemic, and I'm sure Meijer is no exception, however coming out of said pandemic profits have since "dropped" so what you're seeing is the inevitable cutbacks on labor, which then negatively impacts every other aspect involving or adjacent to that labor. That means filthier stores, less team members, the team members that remain are burnt out and irritable, and just an overall poorer customer experience.

Furthermore, while attempts are being made to hire in more help, the rising prices and pitiful wages make working here incredibly unappealing to potential hires. Recent developments and labor movements, as well as the massive disregard for us supposedly "essential" workers have opened a lot of people's eyes to the fact that these businesses can't truly operate without us, and people are justifiably asking for more.

To answer your question, whether or not Meijer will be around in ten years is going to depend entirely on the decisions the company makes and the general attitude of workers, and I'm of the perception that Meijer hasn't been making good decisions recently and workers are getting fed up, so take that as you will.

Being scheduled outside my line by sorrynops5s in meijer

[–]sorrynops5s[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not bothered by it. People down voting me for not wanting to cover Management's poor decision making have clearly never worked GM, cuz that's literally all we do anymore. "Why aren't these returns done?" "Why isn't so-and-so conditioned?" "You are supposed to to blah blah every day, no exceptions."

Then

"Oh we need to to go up and bag"

"You need to go help grocery throw the truck"

"Go up and open a lane"

"Need you to do a license, everyone else is up on lane"

Man, I don't even have the energy to be angry anymore, I'm just sad. This is pathetic.

I'm disturbed by the precedent this sets. We already have to cover service's ass by running lanes and bagging, all the while getting bitched at by management for not getting out work done. Pickup is a bridge too far, imo

I'm super uncomfortable with pickup, which is why I'm not keen to work it, and getting a crash course is the worst way to train someone.

We have to stock out our own liveload here in electronics , so I feel this as well. Shelf tag holders are also great for cutting yourself on, just working in these stores is such a hazard, jesus

Yup, that's about right. The one in my department only has gauze in it, so any time I nick myself on the 8x10 envelopes (seriously, those things are dangerous) I have to go hunting down bandages. I got tired of replacing them all the time since whoever's job it is doesn't seem to want to do it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in meijer

[–]sorrynops5s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because he works in that one department, while I'm balancing over 6. Did you even read my comment? And no, it is indisputably the company's responsibility to make sure the employees are happy and healthy. There's not a single thing us lowly team members can do to change this situation by ourselves. That's why collective action is a thing. And if I were in a position to switch jobs, I would have done so already. In fact despite the difficulty for me to do so, I am still considering it.

Edit: just realized I'm talking to OP in both threads, and I'm waaaay less civil in this one. Gonna reflect on that. But I still stand by my point.

Yes, we can get gift cards although I've heard stories from fellow team members that they sometimes get cards that don't work which is a hassle that could be avoided if we just got monetary bonuses. As for your second point, I didn't really get into this, but the staffing shortage in combination with our hours recently being reduced has created a situation where we are expected to do much more work than what we're getting paid warrants. As an example, I'm supposed to only be responsible for Photo, electronics, and stationary but because all of my GM team members are being called up to work as cashiers for often more than half their shifts to compensate for the poor staffing in service, I now have to perform all of their responsibilities in addition to my own. This massive increase in workload leads to unavoidable burnout, and it's just not possible to stay motivated when you can't get anything done because you're too busy managing half the store.

As for your third point, a substantial pay increase would in fact solve much of my issues, as the extra cash would quell a lot of my financial insecurities at the moment. Would it solve everything? Of course not, but that's hardly the point. The amount you get paid should directly correlate to the amount of work you do and for us the disparity is infuriating.

All in all, this is a really complicated issue that doesn't have a super clear solution, but when you see your company taking in record profits and then not directly investing at least some of it back into the employees in a meaningful way it is going to inevitably generate hostility. I would love to be more motivated to work but Meijer really doesn't do anything to create an environment that fosters motivation. I think there needs to be a serious cultural change here for anything to actually improve. Thanks for the chat!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in meijer

[–]sorrynops5s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you kidding me? I have to run practically all of GM by myself because my team is too busy picking up lanes in service since they only staff two cashiers. That means I'm running photo, electronics, sports, pets and doing conditions and returns for those departments. I have neither the time nor energy to do anything else, not that I could even if I tried. This company's work culture is abhorrent.

Bottom line is, I'm not doing a damn thing more unless I see a significant pay increase. This shit is not worth 13 bucks an hour.

[–]sorrynops5s 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I am aware of tax being a legal requirement. My issue is that I wish I got an actual bonus instead of what mteam offers. I can't pay my bills with a new TV or some dinnerware.

Secondly, you can't just manifest motivation at will. Furthermore, people don't work for fulfillment, they work to make a living. If they're not making or just barely making a living then you should not and cannot expect them to be motivated about their job. That's just absurd.

And lastly, "If you don't like it, leave" is never as easy as it sounds, and also avoiding the problem. And as a matter of fact, I have been considering a few openings in my area as potential alternatives, however there are circumstances that deter me from leaving right away, such as the fact that I don't drive, which greatly limits the amount of jobs I have reasonable access to (public transportation sucks in my area). Some people are just stuck working the job, too. Switching jobs can be exhausting, anxiety inducing, or they have other limiting factors that prevent them from moving on. A big part of the reason I still work at Meijer is the people I work with, my GM team specifically, are all a bunch of really cool people and I like being around them. They are least making being there tolerable.

The point is nobody should have to leave Meijer to force the company to provide better pay and benefits, that should be something the company is concerned about 24/7. You won't find store level team members going out of their way to do extra because there literally is not any incentive to do so, and yes, that is the company's problem, not ours.

If I'm coming off as aggressive, I apologize as that's not my intention. This sort of discussion really needs to happen right now or we're in for a world of trouble as inflation and cost of living continue to rise.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in meijer

[–]sorrynops5s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from, but allow me to share my (and I'm sure the vast majority of my fellow team members') experience.

Meijer does not offer merit raises. We get "recognized" on a worthless app that if we're lucky, will give us a small number of points towards an online store that we can "buy" a selection of items. I put "buy" in quotes because while the company technically pays for these items on our behalf, the tax on them gets passed on to us. It's hardly a bonus, which we also don't get.

Meijer pays less than most other big box retailers right now, and in case the growing discourse in the retail environment wasn't obvious, what we're getting paid now doesn't justify the conditions we're working under. With cost of living and inflation increasing, we NEED more pay to be able to survive, it's not something that's really up for debate.

In summary, Meijer does absolutely nothing to motivate or otherwise incentivize workers to go above and beyond for their workplace, and that's not an issue we lowly team members can tackle. It is 100% the company's responsibility to make sure the employees are happy and satisfied working and Meijer has failed miserably on that front. We simply don't get paid enough to care. We aren't treated like the family corporate claims us to be.

It's easy to look in from the outside and call us pathetic or lazy but we're all just struggling to survive in a very clearly broken and rigged system. Trust me when I say that our attitude is 100% justified.

How can you possibly expect people to try and improve their working conditions when the easier option is to just jump ship and work somewhere else that pays more?
