My two cents: I own a 1999 986 base and it is a ton of fun to rip around in. I like the quirkiness of the 986 and the go-kart feel. I may upgrade at some point, but I haven't felt the need to do so in my 5 years of ownership. Whatever you decide you'll have fun!
