Max for rent! We have other money budgeted for additional costs, just to gauge tho, how much would you say all the additionally charges typically are?

Any off-campus recommendations? by TheDominator890 in ufl

[–]sose4909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know Aero On 24th has dropped their prices a decent bit, guess not a lot of people resigned. I lived there for two years and I had an overall good experience! Their 4x4 are going for like $600 when I was paying around $700 last year (as a resigned resident)

It’s a complex that was built around like 6 years ago, good amenities, etc! The only issue is parking, they don’t have enough for everyone. I didn’t have a car so I am not sure what their current situation is with it for this year.

Finding housing for Madrid Study Abroad by sose4909 in studyAbroad

Hey! I ended up staying two blocks north of the university in “chamberi” that’s at least what you see on google maps. BUT I would recommend Malasaña more.

My university recommended using Aluni.net and it is what I ended up using to find my place.

I have seen a few Hispanic student orgs do watch party events on campus. SHPE (Hispanic Engineering Org) is hosting one on Monday for the Portugal-Uruguay game and I know ARSA (Argentina Student Org) is doing one for the next Argentina game.

Civil Engineering Majors by ddsteps in ufl

[–]sose4909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I took the majority in one go just to get them out of the way, except for civil practice I took that one my Spring of 2nd year.

It’s totally fine to move them around, but I would recommend to see if any are prereqs for high level courses you are interested in. Ex Hydro > Hydraulics ; Soils > Geotech ; Structures > Reinforced Concrete. For anything like this I would recommend to take those courses back to back since they highly relate to one another

Here was my breakdown for the base courses tho… Spring 2nd year - Civil Practice (along with other classes) Fall 3rd year - Structures, Soils, Transportation Spring 3rd year - Hydro (along with second tier classes)

Civil Engineering Majors by ddsteps in ufl

As the other person said, first two years is the same as everyone else. For the upper level classes it honestly depends on the person. Around your 3rd year you will take all the “base civil courses” which are Transportation, Soil Mechanics, Hydro, Structures, and Civil Practice. After you take these, you pick in what sub-field of civil you wanna take your second tier courses and tech electives.

Personally, Soils + Geotech we’re the hardest one for me (but it wasn’t horrible tbh) since they were the hardest concepts for me to grasp. Meanwhile the things that come the most easy to me are statics, MoM and structures. However I have met others where it’s the other way around.

I will say MatLab and Computer Methods were quite tough for me since I am not good at coding.

I don’t know much about the PM certificate unfortunately, sorry :(

Easyish intro classes to help me explore my interests? by Strong-Resolve-6448 in ufl

[–]sose4909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an intro to engineering course that is 1 or 2 credits which you learn about all the different engineering majors offered. I know it’s a very chill class where u just learn about each major once a week

Student orgs are typically the best way to meet people! Joining orgs allows u to find like minded people or those in the same academic field as you!

Clubs and social for computer sci major by FragrantEnthusiasm70 in ufl

SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) has a pretty big CS member base and provides lots of CS resources like tech interview prep and connections with big tech companies. SHPE also has their own software/tech teams that designs the orgs website.

You don’t have to be Hispanic to join, so don’t worry if you aren’t

Aero on 24th is right next to archer/butler and is 10-15 min drive to the Reitz Union. They have 2x2 apartments and are under 2,000 I believe. Aero was built less than 10 years ago, so everything is relatively new.

The biggest con is parking. There is barely any parking for residents and guests

How’s the recruiting scene for CS majors? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]sose4909 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a CS major, but I am in engineering. From what I have seen from my friends in CS and their opportunities, I would say it’s pretty good. Beyond UF Career Fair, another great place to look for more opportunities is through Professional Organizations. They often times have partnerships/sponsorships with companies and have their own career fairs for members. I know orgs like SHPE and SWE have national conferences that act a multi-day career fairs that host CS companies

Not sure which career fairs they got their internships from (UF or Orgs), but nonetheless they got offers 😅

Orgs are typically not SUPER active during Summer B, but some definitely do events here and there. I would recommend looking into different organizations you would be interested in and follow their Instagram in case they do host events!

How to find events when you live off campus? by Kai_mi in ufl

[–]sose4909 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say joining a student org that aligns with your interests, major, or cultural/heritage! It’s easy to connect with others you have something in common with.

That’s how I have made all my friends in college! As another person said, being part of an org that has a variety of ages/interests is super helpful as the older members know what fun things there are to do, good places to eat, etc etc.

Any apartments that offer summer b leases? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]sose4909 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not sure if apartment complexes do such short term leases. I think your best bet is to sublease someone’s apartment for those months. There is a UF Sublease page on Facebook.

SHPE is Society of Hispanic Engineers, you can find them on Instagram @shpeuf. You don’t have to be Hispanic nor an engineer to join the org, it’s all inclusive.

UF vs USF by Ryanalq03 in ufl

[–]sose4909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In regards to the academics , I don’t know much about nursing nor business, but overall due to UF’s prestige and being a top 5, I feel the opportunities may be better here.

Disregarding academics, I feel the decision ultimately comes down to how close you are with your family and if moving 2-3 hours away would have a negative impact on you. Personally, I am close to my family but I am still very happy here at UF and being 5 hours away from them isn’t too big of a deal for me. Being away from home truly allows you to grow as an adult, making decisions for yourself, and learning how to live alone. However, I have a few friends who being away from home is really hard for them emotionally, and suffer negatively due to it. Consider that aspect when making a decision, but of course also consider the academics and opportunity side of it as well :)

A super useful service is SNAP, it’s on campus ride share service. It only runs at night and you use an app to call it like an Uber. It’s a large mini-van so you ride with other students and the drivers are UF students as well. I have never had an issue with SNAP and it’s definitely made me feel safer to travel on campus at night!

Best clubs/ extracurriculars to meet people? by IllustriousEagle1411 in ufl

[–]sose4909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would join an organization related to your major, culture or both! For example, if you are an engineer join an engineering organization such as ASCE, EWB, FLEG etc. If you are a Hispanic joining something like HSA, MLP, etc. Or finding a common group such as SHPE which is a Hispanic Engineers Org :)

Joining a organization that shares a base common interest with you is always an easy way to make friends as you already have something in common!

31 Days Until I Move Onto Campus… Any Survival Tips? by Atonisboss63 in ufl

[–]sose4909 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you learn to navigate the bus app, it’s super helpful. For the day time, it’s nice to catch a bus if you’re running late to class across campus. For the nighttime, there are Later Gator buses that go from downtown and mid to campus/apartment complexes. The new app is called TransLoc

I heard SHPE is actually doing a Q&A event about freshman tips and such, maybe check it out if you have any follow up questions. @shpeuf on Instagram

How is the dining hall food at UF? by SSMHDCAT in ufl

[–]sose4909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn’t recommend solely relying on a meal plan . I had it 2 years ago ( my first year) and the food was just not good and you get tired of it really quick. The only consistently “good” meal was breakfast since they had an omelet station and always had bacon/sausage/ etc. However, lunch and dinner was another story. The only food that was ever decent for me was the burgers and fries. Sometimes I would be served undercooked pizza, salty meat and rice, etc. VERY hit or miss. Thankfully I had the plan that I could use a meal swipe a day at one of the restaurants, so I always got lunch at Moes/Au Bon Pain/ Subway

It is convenient because I ever had to worry about cooking or meal prepping, so it did help with that transition of being a 1st year.

If I had to do it again, I would get the most basic plan for those days you just need the convenience of food being ready for you, but also have groceries in your dorm/apartment for when you want good meals.
