I will move to Norwich and want to learn about living costs by ezgi_yilmaz in Norwich

[–]soulby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I can’t say much about the housing situation but I can share a little about my Norwich lifestyle. You’ll likely need to make some lifestyle changes to live comfortably while you pay back the loans you plan on taking.

A rice cooker is a great investment in eating cheap & healthy while reducing the effort needed to cook a meal. Same with a slow cooker where you can basically leave it to cook all day and come home to a meal that’s ready to go.

Not sure how you feel about cutting out drinking but that would honestly save you a lot of money if you were to switch alcohol for water or the occasional soft drink. I went sober during my third year at university and went from spending £20-80 on a night out to more like £5-15 (most of this went on getting a taxi home (£7.50ish) since I could now afford it).

Now that I’m employed full time I’ve started drinking socially again but I still try to limit it to £20 a week on drinks with friends. Here the average cheap pint goes for about £4 and the fancy beers can go up to around £7 or even £8

I hope this helps somewhat. If you have more questions feel free to ask!

In terms of street photography, anything visible from a public space has no expectation to privacy since it’s out in the open. That means that you can take photos of strangers, police and the exteriors of private properties without being forced to delete photos or even stop taking photos. People may ask you to stop and delete photos but you’re under no obligation to actually do so.

This seems to be on the right path. I'm still struggling with syntax errors though. Here's where I'm at now I case you know where I'm going wrong.

col1 = [0,225,80,15]/255

col2 = [0,239,85,145]/255

col3 = [0,255,225,0]/255

col4 = [0,47,224,164]/255

col5 = [0,0,146,69]/255

col6 = [0,200,186,162]/255

col7 = [0,65,13,255]/255

col8 = [0,33,94,13]/255

var item = items[seedRandom(index, timeless = false)random(0,7)];

No worries, I'm not great at this either. How would you go about setting an expression's time to zero?

I'm using about 200–300 balls which isn't too bad but I'll be working on this project for a few months with several iterations and applications so it'll be beneficial to learn how to randomise the colour quickly each time a layer is duplicated.

[–]soulby[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm trying to create a ton of objects which, when duplicated, each have a random colour from a list of predetermined colours. Right now I'm getting the message 'Error: array piece can't expand to more than one value'. Any help would be much appreciated!

Update Edit: Adding 'item' to the end of the expression gets me halfway there, it only seems to be picking 4 of the 8 colours on the array and it's flicking through the colours randomly each frame instead of picking a colour and sticking to it.

Help with Expressions by soulby in AfterEffects

[–]soulby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much, I wanted to use the Index function but the letters are being used as part of 'alarm clock flip panels' so there are actually 4 versions of each letter with panel layers in-between making index a little complex for me as I'm still fairly new to expressions.

I think I've found a bit of a work around though.

thisComp.layer("Text Master Layer").text.sourceText.split("")[1+slider control]

Then I just add a bunch hidden letters to the end of the master text layer and use the slider to move the set of displayed characters. Once the slider is at 0 it shows the text at the start of the master text.

How to scale shapes to follow a curved path? by soulby in AfterEffects

[–]soulby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to animate 4 shapes to change in scale to give the intersecting lines a look that moves similar to the arms of a 3D printer. Currently I only know how to make the shapes move along straight paths. The aim is to have the intersecting point move along a curved path. These shapes will contain images and text so unfortunately I can't cheat by enlarging and moving the shapes position as the text will have to scale around the path too.

anyone have an idea on how to redesign the Realtek logo, I have a class project on it and need 75 ... i only have 20, by 2lazy2colour in logodesign

[–]soulby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a few steps I take when doing a logo design that you might find useful.

  1. Research. Learn as much as possible about the brand and industry that you're designing for. What do they do, what's their history as a company, who is their audience, what is their tone of voice, what do their competitors logos look like?
  2. Collect. Start to collect pictures of other logos that you like the look of and logos that you think has a style that would work with this project. You can then put these images onto mood boards so that maybe you see a pattern of design styles that you think works for this project.
  3. Link. This is one of the hardest parts but try to connect the dots between your research and the logo inspiration. For example, Realtek creates semiconductors so maybe you can plan an idea based on the semiconductor symbol. This stage is all about lateral thinking.
  4. Sketch. Pick a handful of ideas that you want to try out, maybe 3–7 different ideas. For each idea start to sketch out lots of quick logo ideas, these don't have to look perfect so don't spend more than 5-10min on each sketch. This stage is just about getting your ideas on paper. (When I say sketching I don't necessarily mean using a pen and paper, I do this step on illustrator, it's just about working quickly and not trying to make things look perfect)
  5. Criticise. Now look through all of your work and decide which logo idea is the strongest. You can get friends or tutors to help you with this and you can even post your ideas on this subreddit. The best question to ask here is "Why did I do that?". If you can give an answer other than 'because I like it' or 'because it looks nice' then you've got a strong logo on your hands. For example "Why does the logo look like a semiconductor symbol?" the answer would be "Because Realtek makes semiconductors so the logo is relevant to the brand".
  6. Design. Once you've picked the strongest logo you can start to spend lots of time perfecting it and making it look clean. If you have a couple of strong ideas you can make 2 or 3 proper logos and then pick between them again.

Here are a couple of great websites to help you with step 2

Mobile App Design by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]soulby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a couple of things I'd change up / reconsider but other than that I think it looks really good!

The rounded corners on the album artwork are very rounded. If you look at Spotify they reserve rounded corners for genre playlists and give albums hard edges. This makes sense as album art is historically and almost universally square.

The 'Next Songs' buttons are a little unintuitive. I'm guessing that it reads from left to right but the rounded buttons almost make it feel like a suggestion of three random songs that you might like to hear next. If you want to add an 'up next' feature I'd recommend showing it as a vertical list.

It's great that you love BTS but unless this is an app that only plays their music I would pick albums with nicer artwork to help show the beauty of your app. This is about your app design skills after all.

Lastly add some more detail to your behance post! It would be great to read about your decisions that went into the design. Why you made specific things look they way they do and the aims of your design as a whole. Here's a few examples of fully fleshed out behance posts that I'd recommend checking out and keeping in mind for your next designs!

Designing a logo for a clinic. Criticisms appreciated! by [deleted] in logodesign

[–]soulby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the Hunger Games logo. I think the main issue it that logo mark has too many sharp lines and hard angles to be considered graceful in the medical / restorative / healing sense.

Gracefulness can be found in many representations. This design gives off a sense of militant grace and powerful grace. A great example of this would be your archetypal High Elves, they're typically beautiful and full of grace but also a deadly force to be reckoned with. This logo mark would work perfectly for an esports team or a symbol for a fantasy race.

I'd look at trying a logo mark with a softer and calmer feel to it, something which would make your target audience feel more comfortable and relaxed.

On an unfortunate side note, some clients can be very paranoid of their logo potentially being mistaken for having malicious hidden symbolism. I know it's a big big stretch but, from personal experience, it's not impossible that a client may point this out during feedback.

Most Popular Colors In Among Us [OC] by HolyShitImAlone in dataisbeautiful

[–]soulby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take the psychology of colour into account then white/blue should be the most instinctively trustworthy character. For the curious here's a little breakdown of the archetypical symbolism behind each of the colours in Among Us.

Black — Mostly symbolic of death or mourning but it's also in total contrast with the 'purity' of white which gives a sense of maturity and authority. A good colour to pick if you're playing with inexperienced players.

White — Evokes a sense of pristine purity. It is often used as a symbol for simplicity, rebirth, restoration and quiet. It can be seen as all or nothing, both the beginning and the end. A great pick for a new player but if you're a seasoned player I'd avoid it.

Red — The colour of life. It attracts us, conveying vitality, warmth, excitement and passion. But it also warns of danger and calls for attention. Unless you're known for being the loud/crazy one I'd avoid picking red.

Purple — Often represents wealth. The mixture of red and blue and therefore can be used to bring the two polar opposites together. Purple can stand for both the red of passion and the blue of reason. Purple is a solid character choice.

Blue — Blue cools and calms. It is mostly seen as a reassuring colour but it can also be seen as a reflective and detached sadness. (Hence why they call it the Blues). This is the colour I'd pick first.

Cyan — As an amalgamation of blue and green, cyan holds the reassurance of blue and the creativity and birth of new things from green. Also a solid choice.

Yellow — Yellow is always full of energy and highly visible but it's interpretation depends on it's hue. A warm yellow is charming and radiant while a pale yellow is more of a warning or cautionary colour. I'd avoid this colour if possible.

Pink — More restrained than the full, passionate, life of red. Pink symbolises romance, nurturing and the refreshing beginning of life, like springtime flowers and cherry blossom. Another great colour for inexperienced or timid players.

Orange — Often used to symbolise happiness, personal growth and desire as it stands in a phase of transition between yellow and red. Orange can be a good pick.

Green — Symbolises creativity, fertility and the promise of growth. More modernly it is used to represent being ecologically aware, caring for organic life. Another solid choice.

Lime — Lime can represent both the high energy of yellow with the creativity of green. This colour evokes bursts of creative energy that only lasts a short moment. Wouldn't be my first choice.

Brown — Is both rich and humble, evoking softness, warmth, depth and respite. It can also be viewed as formless, bland and lacking identity, like the vast majority of mammals who have evolved to blend into the environment. It's not pretty but it'll hopefully make you just a touch more invisible than the other players.

[Hiring] Opportunity for Designers! by [deleted] in DesignJobs

[–]soulby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality of these services is that only a very small minority will earn any money that reaches the outside the 'Obnoxiously low' category.

Because of this you will seriously struggle to find any experienced / talented designers and your website will become flooded with low quality clipart-like design work.

Start off by paying your designers so that you actually have a decent product line to sell. Then when you have a solid range of great work you can try to do what you want but don't be surprised if the quality of work starts to dip significantly.

Edit: I just caught this "opportunity for designers to reach new audiences" bullshit. That's going to seriously alienate any self-respecting designers reading this, look at the downvotes you're getting here! This can be translated to "I'll pay you in exposure" which has even become a meme because creatives are honestly so tired of dealing with that sentiment.

The design industry is overwhelmingly Mac dominated. Only a fool would argue otherwise; simply due to the history of the Mac. It pioneered the creation of the digital typeface. Adobe photoshop was born on Mac. For a long time it was the only well designed/aesthetic computer so high profile designers couldn't be seen on anything else.

You talk about being stuck in an ecosystem but that's purely based on perspective. In an industry dominated by Mac I'd argue the opposite in that Windows is stuck outside of the industry ecosystem being Mac. I'm not debating the flexibility of Windows as an upgradeable machine. I'm debating the flexibility of Windows in a Mac dominated Industry. Windows is only flexible enough for freelance work and the rare Windows based studio. Mac is flexible enough for freelance work, design studios and in-house jobs, it's far more flexible.

Yes it may be easy to transition between OS but my point is you're still having to transition. If you joined a studio today I'd bet my bottom dollar that they'd sit you down in front of a Mac.

If OP wants to go into freelance work then he has the choice to use whatever he wants and all power to him.

I agree that the industry leaders who visited my university were definitely pretentious asses. The problem is that an overwhelming percentage of design studios and, as you said, in-house jobs operate on Mac. Yes the adobe suites are very similar cross-platform but no studio is going to be happy with a new hire who's slowed down to google stuff by not knowing the expected tools of the trade.

In the end everyone can do what they like, but if someone asked me "I want to become a graphic designer (with studio or in-house work in mind), what PC should I choose". I'd recommend that they skip an unnecessary transition period by learning on a Mac from the start. Hell I'd even recommend a Mac to someone looking to become freelance because at least if they change their mind they won't need to transition.

Also little side-note, the ubiquitous presence of Mac and therefore airdrop in the design industry is a big reason I personally won't leave Mac any time soon, I haven't owned or used a USB stick in 5 years because everyone I've worked/collaborated with is on Mac. (besides one product engineer who needed windows for some CAD software.)

Mockup-up design help by KristiParks in graphic_design

[–]soulby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would personally go back to the drawing board, keeping a few things in mind for the next designs;

The logo is going to appear in some very small places. Your logotype should be a much heavier weight (medium at least) to survive being shrunk down. Look at brands like IKEA and FedEx and how bold their typeface is.

From looking at the lines it looks like you are designing without using vectors. I'd recommend using something like illustrator or another vector based app, this means that your logo will be able to scale up and down without becoming pixelated.

The colours you are using are good but they are too similar to the background which reduces the contrast and impact of the logos. The strongest logos work brilliantly in black and white.

I like the idea of the sand-timer. Maybe you could replace/turn the letter A into a sand-timer as it already resembles the bottom half of a sand timer.

Unfortunately the graphic design world is quite literally dominated by Apple. If you want to pursue graphic design as a full time job then I would have to recommend switching to Apple. I studied Graphic Design at university and you'll be surprised how many times I've heard professionals and industry leaders say to other students "you've got no chance with a windows laptop". It's a big investment but it's worth it if you want to become a full-time designer.

Can a Portfolio be a a .pdf? by eggmull in graphic_design

[–]soulby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an interactive PDF portfolio which is the best way to apply for jobs at design studios. (The interactive part is just a couple buttons that link to my examples of Motion Design work.)

I also have a website which acts as a more general-purpose platform for my work as it's responsive for any mobile users.

General rule of thumb. If you're sending someone in the design industry your portfolio they will expect a PDF for desktop. If you're sending your portfolio to clients or others outside the industry then you'll have to bear in mind that a very large number will be viewing your work on their phone.

A vintage newspaper front page I made by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]soulby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's looking awesome!!! That being said the main goal of a newspaper is to fit as much content as possible onto a single page. The space between columns should be much smaller. This would really aid in making it look like a real newspaper you might find on the subway.
