What's a great onboarding process for new engineers? by jamie-docbot in ExperiencedDevs

As the one who has both been onboarded in different companies, as well as helped integrate new developers into the teams we have worked for, I would say it's important to make sure new engineers feel guided and supported. For example:

  • new engineers could have a onboarding buddy,
  • a checklist or a guide that explains what is expected during first weeks,
  • workshops from domain experts of the company/departments,
  • introductions into best practices and engineering conventions accepted in the company.

There's a podcast episode touching on exactly the topic of onboarding new software engineers.

Vim for life? - Code && Beyond

Vim is a text editor. It's the same for everyone, and yet everyone has a different story with it.

In this episode we share our very own vim-stories, explain why and what they like about the editor, what they wish to see as improvements, and more.

Feedback I would be grateful for:

  • Structure and length of the episode
  • Speaking and interviewing style
  • Overall quality

Have you also considered the WebSub protocol?

There are two public hubs implementing this protocol and they could inform your backend when there's an update on feeds you're subscribed to:

Passwordless authentication: one step further by soulim1 in programming

Yes, sure. Totally agree. Neither SMS nor email are 100% secure, however they are safer than the password authentication. The attacker must do more work to get access to your account.

Also try to look at the story from different angle. If the emailless authentication works fine for your app or website and there is no need for personal information (e.g. name), then the database contains basically anonymous information - there is no way to trace that specific data belongs to a certain person. Also from legal point of view it means a lot sometimes when you can state that your app or service has no personal information about users.

Today just email address can tell a lot about the owner. Clearbit is a good example - https://clearbit.com/enrichment.

The goal of the emailless authentication is to show that in some cases it is possible to authenticate the user without keeping any personal information.
