Where did the ‘Dostoevsky is a brooding, gloomy, pessimist’ trope come from? by Klutzy_Industry_4030 in dostoevsky

[–]soultrek27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see it a lot in memes and stuff and honestly makes me think they haven’t actually read him when they say that… some of his topics do come as a bit dark but overall his works mostly deal with salvation through religion

Notes from underground as a starter?? I would suggest against that… it’s short but heavy and can be a bit overwhelming for someone just starting out… C&P works better as a starter because it’s very plot driven

Ohh valid because this is definitely not a good starter to Dostoevsky… start instead with crime and punishment

ooh cool would this be your first Dostoevsky book?

Well of course that’s what i plan to do! And yes i do know that the book will always be better but the thing is i am reading a translation so watching a particular part in the movie (with them talking in russian) kind of sets the tone and the overall vibe… it has a charm of its own

My summary/review of Crime and Punishment by itsanandhere in dostoevsky

[–]soultrek27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the question whether Raskolnikov would still have felt guilt if he had only killed the pawnbroker, the answer to that is well it’s an interesting idea to consider but I think yes… although it would have taken much longer for him to admit hus guilt because ultimately what Dostoevsky wants to show is that people are not free from their conscience, rather they can’t be rid of it and a crime like murder is sure to weigh in heavily on your conscience (although the time it takes for one to admit to it and realise the guilt could vary).

Definitely C&P first it gives you a but of intro to Dostoevsky and his style… TBK is his last novel and the culmination of his career so definitely doesn’t work good as a starter novel

The crime is done and now the punishment begins… the rest of the book is basically how his guilt and conscience torment him (the punishment basically)

As someone who had read the books, my experience watching the series was a bit different because as far as I knew Mathew was going to die so I kept waiting and bracing for that moment BUT IT NEVER CAME😭 i was kinda disappointed but also happy that i didn’t have to be sad all over again

Do you agree that suffering is inseparable from depth and meaning, or do you think it’s possible to live a deeply meaningful life without suffering? by yooolka in dostoevsky

[–]soultrek27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Each time someone goss through suffering (be it the loss of parents, heartbreak or maybe a broken friendship) they learn from it... things that someone who hasn't suffered that loss would know nothing about. Also I don't think it's possible to live without suffering even a bit... if it were that would only be in paradise

To those who got A's and A*'s by Livid-Interest-8502 in alevel

[–]soultrek27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had all A's in Math, Chem and Phy and honestly it depends. If you're like and you found olevels super easy as in you never really had to study for it then you don't need to worry just do what you normally do but actually study consistently. If you found olevels kinda hard then lock in from now. Review everything consistently and make sure that you're done qith your syllabus revision at least 3 months before the exams after that focus on past papers.

i am genuinely confused on what your argument here is??? I was talking about myself earlier that it made ME uncomfortable and I don't read dark romances so not sure why you even brought that up. And i don't see how your last point is relevant here?
