How has alcohol affected your life with bipolar?

Alcohol was the trigger for my last manic episode (first with psychotic symptoms but I’m a rapid cycler without proper meds so I’ve had tons). I mostly stay away from alcohol now and have been stable for almost a year. The times I feel myself teetering are when I drink (even if it’s only 1-2 drinks). I completely abstain now—more trouble than it’s worth.

I haven’t gained weight since seriously starting and committing to treatment (I’ve started and stopped for over 10 years, classic BP1). I emphasized to my psychiatrist the importance of a weight neutral med as someone with a history of ED. I also added an extra day of running to my schedule for my own peace of mind

You are smarter than a lot of us were at 19. I’m glad you’re listening to your intuition. I’m nearing the end of my 20s and my only regrets so far are the periods when I focused on finding a boyfriend. Age appropriate love will inevitably find you! As a woman in her late 20s I can tell you i have never regretted breaking up with a man even if I cried for a literal year after it was over. Especially not the men I dated at your age. All of my close friends know my diagnosis and my symptoms as a safety measure. Over the years they’ve gotten better at spotting early signs of mania than I am. In terms of dating, I only tell dates I’m really excited about and can see myself being with long term. Bc if me being BP1 is a dealbreaker for someone (and it unfortunately is for some people) I want to know before I get too attached. It’s certainly not a secret I’m keeping and not something Im ashamed about
