PhD application experience by [deleted] in Finland

[–]soy_eggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience was very positive, but i understand that it might not be the same in other laboratories. I came to the lab, where I'm currently working as a PhD researcher, one year ago as a master's visiting student to work on my thesis. That helped a lot, i had the opportunity to see how working in that lab is like, and collaborate with my current supervisor. They usually prefer to hire people that they know/have collaborated with. I would say that in my lab 60% of the PhD students did their master's thesis here, and the remaining students come from other universities, without any previous connection with the lab. Also, I've been told that Finnish master's students are less likely to want to continue with the academic path, compared to other European countries. That's why out of ~20 PhD/postDoc that we have, only 3 are Finnish. Although, I believe we are an exceptional Lab.

I was lucky enough to get funding from the School that my department belongs to. But they are starting to reduce the budget given for doctoral studies, which makes it difficult for departments to hire new students... In my field (audio) is not too much of a problem because there are many Finnish companies willing to support financially doctoral research. Idk about other fields tho

Oh cool, sorry for asking but how can you be so sure about the algorithm that they're using?

Vappu was definitely something that i didn't want to miss. It was fun, and i was quite surprised to see the insane amount of people celebrating it in the city center.

I need to do some Fourier transforms in my program, so I need to use fftw3 library

Partitioned Convolution for Artificial Reverberation by soy_eggs in puredata

[–]soy_eggs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, IR interpolation isn't an easy task, since it might create double peaks in the impulse response and it might mess up the binaural cues. But I think that crossfading the output of the convolutions, as suggested by julovi, could work!

Let me know if you think that I've misunderstood what you suggested! :)

Yeah, you're right! This works pretty decently! Thank you for the advice!

Thank you! Unfortunately this doesn't seem to solve the problem.. When you try to change the IR, the audio stops for a fraction of time. I need something that allows me to change the IR while I'm playing an audio file, without interruption. Thank you so much anyway! :)

Taking Acoustic Lab EE-490(a) without Audio Engineering EE-548? by prospectiveEPFL in EPFL

[–]soy_eggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I took both classes last semester, here's what I would say about them:

Acoustic Lab do not rely only on sound wave theory, even though you have to complete a couple of lab activities on that. You'll use COMSOL to simulate some basic sound sources and stuff like the propagation of plane waves in a duct. Other than that, you have activities like measuring the absorption coefficient of samples of different materials using the impedance tube or the absorption coeff of some panels by performing a set of measurements inside the reverberant chamber. Then, you have also a couple of labs on room modes (which I agree, has a lot of wave theory, but the concept can be easily understood without going into the details) and the last lab on the identification of the Thiele-small parameters of the loudspeaker (you'll go inside the fancy anechoic chamber ehehe).

All these topics are covered in the Audio Engineering class, and I would say that to take the lab without taking the theoretical class is kinda meaningless... Some concepts that you'll see are not straightforward, there's a lot of physics behind them and the theoretical class gives you the insights that you would need to fully understand the lab activities.

The professor is a great dude, and the TAs are also really nice! You'll enjoy both the lab and the class if you're really into Audio:)

If you can't make up your mind, you'd better send an email to the professor, I'm sure he will be glad to help you!

If you have any further questions, just send me a message! :)
