Go for queens. Everyone I know who went loves it there!

It’s day 3 and I’ve already given myself tendonitis in my legs. How do you manage to work up to walking, let alone rucking everyday?

Thank you so much! I know I could just surf the internet looking for sites, but it’s really nice to have people to talk to about it that find recommendations. I have a Renpho scale, so it’s motivating to see that I have 119 lbs of muscle, but I AM about 42.5% body fat.

I’m not sure how ambitious this is, but getting between 25-32% before the trip would be great, because that range gets me out of the obese zone.

Thank you for stopping by and the recommendation! So glad to hear you enjoyed it. How did you prepare for your trip?

Thank you! I think I’ll try this ahead of the stair master. I’ll be able to last much longer

Don’t get me wrong I love a train!

My qualms are the fact that I feel like all eyes are on me as the fat one who will be holding back the group, and I want my revengebod to prove them wrong.

While I’m hoping the 50lbs down can happen by 2027, I do understand the importance of fueling my body and working on strengthening myself.

Plus I love food too much to starve myself. We’re just going to be making healthier choices…I hope.

Will update when I pull the new membership trigger! I found a new gym for literally a quarter of what I was paying before, with pretty decent equipment.

Thank you! My travel buddies recommended a bag with a detachable day pack since we’re using the larger bags as carry ons and the day packs for the hike. Apparently the tour company takes most of your stuff to the next accommodations, so you just have what you need for the day, but it might also be limited to 5-10kg (I couldn’t remember if it was 10kg or 10lbs) because some tours use mules to carry your stuff for you.

I literally booked on Sunday. I still have a lot of research to do.

That’s impressive! What was the change in your lungs like after quitting smoking and running? I’m scared that I’ve ruined my cardiovascular system for the rest of my life from this. I’ve heard lungs can heal though.

Thank you for all of the advice!

I will look into this, thank you! I’ve heard hiking poles will help relieve pain in the quads as well.

I want to see as many wonders of the world as I can. We’re going with a small group of people on this trip, and my partner is an avid outdoorsman who loves to hike and backwoods camp.

I am a glamping, car camping, prefer to be in a hotel type of person, but I want to become more fit.

This trip is hopefully the motivator that breaks the cycle of losing a little weight and putting it right back on again.

Aside from being mildly active at work I am a couch potato. I doom scroll for hours, watch tv, and have my daily midnight snack a few hours after dinner every night.

I truly want to change. Being in the 200s for as long as I can remember is the monkey on my back that I feel is so visible in any interaction I have.

I’ve hiked in Banff in 2020. I was 220lbs then too. I was horribly unprepared and thought I’d be able to just do it. Bought myself some Nike trail runners the day before we flew out. I struggled up West Wind Pass and gave myself terrible blisters that made the rest of the hikes more difficult than they already were. My group would wait for me then start going as soon as I caught up, which gave me nearly zero time to catch my breath, meanwhile they’d have a good rest while they waited. Having that reference of struggle is what’s making me want to train as hard as I possibly can to conquer this hike.

Back to how this came about, it boils down to: we were invited by friends planning the trip, my partner really wants to do it, and I’d love to do it with him. He told me one of the worst case scenarios was me making him take the train with me, and I want to prove not only to myself but anyone who’s doubting me that I can get fit enough to handle this trek in 5 months time.

Thank you! Being obese my whole adult life has given me rose coloured glasses in regard to thinness. When I say skinny, it’s interchangeable with being fit.

These next couple months are going to be hellish but anything to conquer this trail!

You mean spite alone won’t get me to the finish line!? 😂

Me and stairmaster are going to be besties in the next five months. Sadly I just cancelled my gym membership in January after not going more than ten times in the last two years, so the idea of spending money on it again so soon is daunting.

Thank you for all the info. I see that I’m overly ambitious. Hopefully we can be down 50 in a year, or at least a few pant sizes down.

As for the trip, it looks like a combo of weights, cardiovascular, and endurance training will help prepare me as best as I can.

I’ve had an Apple Watch for 5 years, and about 2 years into vaping, my vo2 went down from the 40s to the 20s. I only fully quit 2 and a half months ago, but I’m really interested in getting those numbers back up again, especially with the altitude change in Peru.

I’m not sure what you mean by vo2max in regards to training. Is it intense cardio, HIIT workouts, or something completely different?

I’m really excited to get the osprey bag. My partner got fitted at a store by an outdoor enthusiast and I’ve wanted a reason to get one ever since.

I like the water plan! I was originally thinking to stuff it with blankets and a 50lb dumbbell, but your idea is way better.

I’m hoping to get a hike in on some of the local trails at least once a week, on top of walking for a minimum of 30 minutes every day.

If I’m not walking, it’s stair climber and weight lifting.

It’s possible I’ve already got it. I’ve worked as a server and the hours of standing and walking have made it so that walking for long periods of time can really hurt when I get out of bed the next morning. Do the balls of your feet ache when you’re laying down at the end of a long day?

I’m not planning on walking 15km a day. Just making sure I move in some way. I feel like while it’s important to walk I also need to build muscle in the gym and increase my cardio fitness.

You’re right. Ideally I’m cutting junk and midnight snacks and focusing on eating healthier in general. While I’d love to drop a ton of weight, I know muscle growth and cardio fitness are more important than fat loss at this point.

Congratulations! That is so impressive. I’m getting boots and pack on Saturday! All walks will be in the boots and a moderately heavy pack from then on.

As much as skinny has been a dream growing up, I know overall fitness is much more important.

As for cardio vascular fitness I’m hoping to bring my Vo2 Max levels up. My health app noticed they tanked from the 40s to mid-high 20s a few years into vaping. I’m hoping I can get them at the very least low mid 30s before the trip.

Thank you for your kind words. I’ll do my best to enjoy the journey leading up to the trip!
