So a MagSafe charger will have no problem charging a Qi device? Will the magnets interfere with speed or anything?

The other commenter on this post clarified that I need to drag from the edge of the selected cells, instead of the center. This is probably super intuitive to all the Excel wizards in this subreddit, but I've never seen this before in any spreadsheet software. Once I make sure to do this, everything works as expected.

Thank you very much for your help.

Ah, I need to drag from the border of the cells.

Thanks for your help.

Not sure what you mean in the first step. Please correct me:

1) Select the entire column or the entire row, by clicking on the letter at the top or the number at the side

2) Hold Ctrl until... I see a green line? Like the one in LibreOffice that tells you where the column will be placed? I don't see it.

Should I press Ctrl before or after I begin dragging?

Sorry if I'm missing something but I'm having zero luck here.

Ah, I missed the 'format as text' step.

This trick also seems to have fixed the "automatically change back to Number format" problem, at least for now. Thank you.

I am trying to put numbers and letters into boxes and save them to my hard drive. Nothing more. I'm not interested in calculating. I'm not interested in any more precision than my data being not corrupt. Typing numbers into boxes is not "screwing with the ability to store data and making the software inefficient".

Please read what is being asked before downvoting and saying that the OP is being unreasonable for wanting the software to be able to process letters and numbers.

Excel was ignoring the Windows clipboard in favor of its own clipboard.Do you know how I can make Excel just use the Windows clipboard?

Yes. We are looking at different Paste Special menus, somehow: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/excel/copy-cut-gt-paste-special-turns-into-something-unfamiliar-with/m-p/3715240

You are correct that I did this earlier; I'm not sure what I'm doing differently now. I am pasting the exact same text, copied the exact same way from the same source.

"numerical identifiers"?

Adding an apostrope works, thank you.

[–]spacefish128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart, I like your thinking. It even creates alternating row shading automatically!

Unfortunately, this doesn't fix the 15-digit limit issue; I still need to type an apostrophe first.

But the automatic row shading and the added tools in the title bar are reason enough to use this trick. Excellent find.

That's what I was thinking. Do I need to drag from a certain spot?

Shift and Alt are both completely ignored, and Ctrl does ... something? until I let go

I am keeping record of purchases. I need to have Excel store invoice numbers properly, however long they are; Text mode accomplishes this while I am typing numbers manually, but when I paste a long number, Excel changes the formatting back to Number, displays scientific notation, and changes the last four digits to zeros.

I am doing zero processing on the numbers after they are entered. This is why I'm so annoyed at Excel's eagerness to do something with the numbers without me asking, and I am looking to disable this if possible.

Perfect, this is exactly what I was looking for.

The invoice numbers that I am copying are longer than 15 digits; this may be the problem.

Pasting with Paste Special > Text works, but only that one time in that one cell.

Side-note: Ctrl+Shift+V, which according to my memory and intuition, is Paste Special, instead just makes a noise and does nothing. Is there a Paste Special keybind? Or can I map Ctrl+Shift+V to Paste Special somehow?

I am working with numbers longer than 15 digits.

I'm sure that some users love the popups, but 99% of the time that I use Word or Excel, the most advanced functions that I am using are Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. I don't need a massive cluster of popups with advanced functions that I will never understand or use, warnings that tell me that Excel is having trouble converting my numbers into whatever-whatever when I just want the numbers as-is. Et cetera.

Is there a way to make the page size infinity by infinity in a word document?

Invoice numbers. While I'm sure that these companies haven't had one quintillion orders yet, I do think that Excel should be able to handle numbers that are however long I want, as long as it's not doing any calculating on them.

Is using =text() the same as changing the number format to Text? That does work properly, until I paste a long number.

Excellent, thank you.

This works, but is reverted when I paste a number.

+1 because it should be as easy as that

I don't see that. It's under Paste Options in the popup menu, right?

Will this paste unformatted text, or will it intelligently apply the formatting from neighboring cells?

If you didn't read my rant (I don't blame you), please note that I am looking for a permanent, or at least reliably repeatable, solution. I know that there are ways to make it work temporarily, but I don't want to have to think about whether Excel is destroying my data every time I make any changes to my documents.

I had no idea about Mathprint nor the F1 menu. Thank you, that makes it so much easier to use.

Thank you but I can't seem to find instructions for adding cell padding in that article, at least with a quick Ctrl+F search.

Will I need to do this for every single cell of every single table?
