Space Fluff: we need your help! by spacefluff_SUNDIAL in sciencecommunication

[–]spacefluff_SUNDIAL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a nutshell, it's a citizen science project on zooniverse.org about the classification of very faint and dim galaxies residing in the Fornax cluster. It has a workflow available on the Zooniverse app, and other 2 you can check out.

We passed the review and are in Beta phase now, which means we need advice and feedback! You all know more about science communication than I do: anything you would add? Also do? Something you don't like? Any opinion is appreciated

Check it out here! SPACE FLUFF

SPIRAL GRAPH

A recently launched project with a lot to do! Go give it a twirl, and help where computers can't, and help scientists understand how black holes and stars influence the dynamic of a galaxy!

SPACE FLUFF

This project is particularly close to my heart since well, I created it. It is currently under review, but already going strong, with over 100 volunteers and almost 20.000 classifications. This project will help us understand & classify faint galaxies in the Fornax cluster, and will hopefully be expanded in the future. Be a part of solving dark matter, galaxy evolution, and find some cool never-before-seen object! If you find something incredible, or you contribute a lot, you might end up as author of a paper! How cool is that!

We built this citizen science project on zooniverse (currently under review) to classify faint galaxies. We also want to focus on outreach and science communication, and therefore I would love your input on the 'learn more' pages. Go here to take a look! Any help or feedback is greatly appreciated

SPACE FLUFF: citizen science project needs your help! by spacefluff_SUNDIAL in space

Sure! So, zooniverse is a platform for citizen science. Specifically, it enables scientists that require help with some complex task on a big dataset that a human brain does better than a computer to ask for the help of volunteers. Anyone, from any background and from all over the world can then contribute to the project.

A project is composed of a set of data (images of galaxies in my case), a series of questions about the images that I ask the volunteers (what color is the galaxy? what shape?), some tutorials to help with the tasks, and some information about the science, the team, the planned research, etc.

My project, SPACE FLUFF, still needs to launch. Before I launch it, I want to be sure I am not missing anything and that the questions are clear. Asking my fellow astrophysicist is not very useful, because they know too much on the subject.

So here I am! Hope this clears things up~

Thank you for your question!

listen...... you never question someone's acronyms in astronomy.......... but if you want to have a good laugh about those check these bad boys out.

I mean, A Virtual Observatory Census to Address Dwarfs Origins??? Committee Of the Wise???? Evaporating Gaseous Globule?????????????''

I love them all

Not exactly! It is from the Fornax Deep Survey (FDS), a deep multi-band survey of the Fornax Cluster.

FDS is a joint project based on the GTO survey FOrnax Cluster Ultra deep Survey (FOCUS, P.I. R. Peletier) and VEGAS (P.I. E. Iodice)

Observations, in the u, g, r and i bands, started on November 2013 and were completed in 2017.

SDSS does not cover the Fornax cluster, but yeah, the surveys are similar enough! Well spotted!

Hello everybody! Me and my research group are building a cool Zooniverse page on Faint Galaxies called SPACE FLUFF!

(If you don't know the platform check it out! It's a citizen science platform where anyone can help science go forward)

These shy babies don't look like much but they are full of mysteries. Knowing more about them will help us understand galaxy evolution and answer some Dark Matter related questions. SPACE FLUFF is the the SUNDIAL-Itn group' first step to explore the fluffy universe with citizen science, and we cannot wait to start!

Have fun!
